Great to encourage a love of reading in KS1
I brought both set 1 and 2 for my little boy's 5th birthday in January. Although he did not have the phonic knowledge to read them independently at that point I wanted to get him something that interested him as he was not enjoying the books the school was sending home and not interested in reading. We began by discussing the pictures and I would read them to him, encouring him to read simple words that he could decode. Although these are advertised as phonetic reading books and each book has a phonics focus they do not follow the order of sounds learnt in the DFE letters and sounds/Jolly Phonics/Read Write inc like some other books sets do. However, what they are great for is encouraging a love of reading. My little boy is going into year 1 in September and these books have proved to be invaluable during lockdown. We have read them together (discussing the trickier words and phonetics sounds) and now he is much more independent in his reading and is able to apply his knowledge when reading other books.

Great little set of books
We got these for our 5 year old son and he loves them. He has just finished reception year at primary school and has done well with his reading, we bought these for him at his request. I’m not a primary school teacher so can’t comment on the accuracy of the phonics, what I can say is that as a parent of a child that has grasped the phonics he’s been taught, the books seem to be an appropriate level for him and he is loving reading them. I have always enjoyed reading and it’s great to see him enjoying these and already choosing to pick up a book. Will definitely be buying more in the series.

Can't reccomend these enough
Amazing. My 5 year old loves these. It challenges him to sound out jew words whereas I didn't think he was getting that challenge from his own school reading books. At first I thought I would have to bribe him to read them but he loves them so much. They focus on particular sounds such as 'e' in each book whu h makes it so much easier.Such amazing value for money

Not the best pbonics books I seen.
I bought these for my Lego loving early reader who loves super heroes. Unfortunately, they were not as easy for him as I thought they would be and as a result have been left to collect.dust on the shelf. He was so excited when he first got them but unfortunately, they were a bit of a let down (for us anyway). I will be sticking to Oxford Reading Tree from now on, especially the Julia Donaldson set.

Great
This is a great set for young readers (my boys in reception and year 1 enjoy it). It has simple phonics stories which they can decode quite easily, but the content is more exciting than a lot of the books you get from school (Eg biff and chip) so it keeps them motivated. The books are small and thin, but that's because they are kept simple for children to read, so don't expect long drawn out stories or loads of pages per book, but for reading practice for little ones it does a great job. I would recommend. It also comes in a cardboard carry case to help keep all of the books organised and together

These are amazing ! My little brother is 10 and loves lego batman . He is not a strong reader at all and struggles to read basic things. We were trying to find something a bit more age appropriate to go back to basics with him and build on his confidence with reading. These work a treat and despite the word content being basic the stories are interesting for him so he wants to read them .

Great books for encouraging 4/5 year old to read.
I bought these for my 5 year old who’s just started school. He absolutely loves them! He got really bored of the books that he was sent home with from school but he loves Lego Batman so I thought this might encourage him to want to read. It definitely did! He picks up these books to read without me prompting him. There are 10 reading books and 2 work books. Each book concentrates on a specific vowel sound. We loved these so much that we’ve just purchased the Scholastics Spider-Man Phonics books too.

Not phonics!
The ten books don't adhere to phonics so to describe it as such is misleading. For instance, the Book 1 has the word "cycle" in it. And every second word doesn't adhere to the laws of phonics, eg come, he, to, go, so if your child is learning in school to read through phonics, as mine is, avoid this and stick with a considered phonics book, like the Julia Donaldson Songbirds collection. I have to keep interrupting my child with this one and explain, ok, this word is a crazy word and breaks the rules. I'm worried that confronting him with all the words that break the rules when he's just starting will put him off. He's five and started primary school this year. That said, if your child isn't learning by phonics, the books are nice and my child loves the Lego Batman characters.
