The sides usually stay mostly white but the top takes the colour well. I have used this product for more than 5 years and no one ever noticed or commented about colouring. One hint is that I do not use the applicator. Instead I squeeze some colour on the top and use a comb. As for the sides and back I squeeze colour on the hair and brush with an old tooth brush.
