Review: Good but pricey - I used this whilst Triathlon training and it certainly seems to improve lung capacity and make breathing easier. It’s difficult to know if it improved my overall sporting performance though. Even the low level settings provide a bit of resistance and you can easily find the right level for you. Fortunately this can be cleaned in boiling water to avoid germs being breathed in as well. Although made of plastic it’s sturdy and well made. Mine has lasted for years. The only downside is that it is quite expensive but it seems to be the only product like this that’s out there.

**Q: Can I practice breathing out as well as in?**
A: Not as far as I know - the product is designed with a one way valve system to strengthen inspiratory muscles so it's designed for breathing in.  It does that very well, and the result should be more power breathing out.

**Q: Can you use it for weight lifting**
A: It is a product in which resistance can be regulated

**Q: How dose it work**
A: The very basic answer to your question is that it works by restricting airflow thus forcing the pulmoary muscular system to work harder. As with all repeated muscular effort, if the muscles are challenged they respond with growth in capacity or put in a different way, their ablity to perform.Thus the breath trainer has a spring loaded syste that as you progress daily and the intial level becomes easier, you tighten the spring making the muscles work harder to get the same volume of oxygen. The more you do the better the capacity, however the trainer is merely an aide. To make real progess you need to also work the entire cardio vascular system oxygenating the blood and the body. I would suggest you incorporate this device, like I have done with treadmill, biking and sustained swimming. The benefits are dependant on regular use as part of a holyistic approach to fitness

**Q: Would you take this, a few minutes before a race in order to have a competitive advantage or would lungs already be fatigued from using it just before**
A: I've been looking into buying one of these machines and as such I've been trying to ascertain the benefit. Dr. Mitch Lomax has researched the impact of this type of 'breathing exercise' and found that '5-7% improvement' is found in warming up prior to running and a '12% improvement' is found when inspiratory training is undertaken on its own and 15% when both warm up and training are used. 
These are fairly spectacular increases and I haven't read her research paper to see what state of fitness the runners were prior to the experiment (I would assume not high end athletes) - however it does indicate that warming up results in an improvement.

It does what it says on the tin. I had never heard of this gadget before, so I was going entirely on the reviews. I have bought a couple of things on amazon after reading a range of favourable reviews so I was happy to shell out as I had confidence that it would be correct. I am not a believer that the reviews are only written by the company or competitors. If you get a large enough range of reviews there must be something in it. In any event you don't get reviews if you go into a shop, you take pot luck. I took up serious swimming in February last year. I wanted to learn to do the crawl. I could not do it at all although I was already a good swimmer of the breaststroke. The big problem is breathing or the lack of breath. I found when I first started I would hold my breath which would mean after a length that I was out of breath I then learnt to take breaths but again that is hard work. I was told to do three stokes then a breath then three strokes then a breath to the other side. That is all very good but as a complete novice you are gasping for breath and taking no notice of your technique so it all gets worse and you turn your head to breath after every stoke. I have improved just through application. I got the machine just after Christmas as I was sad enough to order it on Christmas day. I erroneously thought that you blew and that was the resistance and was amazed when I did the suck and that was the resistance. I had to do it on zero as I was so poor. I have turned it up one notch since as I have done it for the last few days.I now have a lot more confidence in my breathing and today I changed from single lengths of the crawl to 3 lengths. I don't know if it is the machine but I now have a lot more confidence and will stick at it until I can do continuous lengths of the crawl. I would recommend this machine as it does what it says on the tin. I will not stop until I can swim a mile of the crawl and still not be panting.Like any exercise you get out of it what you put in.
