I tried with a piece of mdf beneath it and discovered that it relies on cutting down into the support substrate, which it duly hacks into with its hard strong blade. So for that reason they do not recommend using a cutting mat; there's only so much damage they can take and I can see this would exceed it so I am keeping it off mine! Using it on a support as hard as mdf just caused the knife to bend with terrible angled cuts resulting; the problem vanished when I used it as per the instructions and I've had perfect results since! I believe the tabs that ride the rails are universal, but Logan might have a better answer for you. For $21 you might just want to check for yourself. It works great BTW. **Q: Is this palstic or aluminum?** A: The one they sent me was aluminum. **Q: Is the blade length adustable? I just need to cut cover stock paper.** A: When you start cutting, the blade extends downward. That's the extent of it. I don't think that you can change that. I haven't had a problem with it being too short . **Q: The package says that it comes with 5 blades and instructions. There are no blades in the package that was sent to me. Where are the 5 blades?** A: I had to replace my cutter a while ago. This looks like the one I have now. Mine did not come with blades.
