Getting the dirt out of the wool will soften it. However, if you are allergic to lanolin in wool, realize that this product has lanolin in it to revitalize the wool. It surely softened my rugs. I had to work diligently at separating the fibers as it dried and when dry. **Q: any enzymes (e.g. protease or other) in the ingredients?** A: There are no enzymes in Outback Gold. **Q: Is it organic?** A: You would need to check the label. Well I read all the wonderful reviews and decided to try it. Im in love with this liquid wash. I got a plastic container and filled it with lukewarm water. Put 1/4 cap of cleanser in the water ( I figured maybe 1/2 gal water). Swished the water with my hand to mix. Let me alpaca socks soak for about 10 minutes while I took my shower. Then squeezed my socks out and hung them up to dry. My socks looked nice and clean. A very slight nice clean smell. I did not have to rinse them. I am so happy I have a safe cleaner for my alpaca socks. Highly recommend this. Well packaged and came on time. I will use this forever. Hope my review helps you.
