I thought I had a faulty unit but the one I got as a replacement was the same. I was told to "pad" the speakers out so that they were closer to my ear, which worked for music but anything over 30 MPH and you hear nothing. In the end I decided to remove the speakers and solder in a 3.5mm female jack plug and use custom fit ear phones. I can now ride at any speed (up to 70MPH) and hear music and phone etc. perfectly.My other issue is the buttons. When you've got thick gloves on they are difficult to find.
