Because most dishwasher detergents (liquid, gel, pacs, whatever) have high amounts of phosphates in them that will tarnish and even start removing the anodized coating from aluminum products. It is best NOT to put aluminum in the dishwasher or it will end up looking like a tarnished watering can.
