Roughnecks - Starship Troopers Chronicles: The Pluto Campaign [DVD] [2001]

Hi, this series of 6 Roughnecks DVDs contains a feature-length animated TV movie that fits in somewhen after the first movie within the Starship Troopers story line. The story tells of another attempt by the bugs to invade Earth space and establish a new colony. But you won't be able to focus on the story to this movie as you'll be distracted by the cheap poorly rendered animation and the sub-standard vocal acting. The production budget for this short-lived show must have been very low considering the quality on display and one wonders who on earth (or in space!) thought it was a good idea to commission it in the first place! You'd have to be a die hard fan to sit through these short DVD TV movies in one sitting. It becomes unwatchable after roughly 10 minutes, and even that's a bit of an understatement. Unsurprisingly this series was cancelled after only one season. There are also scant extras on the DVDs making this even more of an inferior product!

Despite the CG animation looking a little dated by now, this was one of the pioneer shows that went for full CGI. The show still stands up today though, because the dialogue, storylines and voice acting is so good. Like a play in a theatre, you soon forget about the aesthetic limitations and begin to get invested in the characters. There's action of course, but you do feel for the characters in their situation, so that puts it high up in my opinion.
