Mind Machines (Human++ Book 1)

Not sure about the humans, but definitely a Rat++
Prepare to suspend disbelief because Mike Cohen is a venture capitalist with a heart. Here, he's allowing one of his venture investments to test cutting edge nanotechnology on his mother in the hope it will reverse her dementia. It all starts to go wrong when she is kidnapped.As ripping yarns go, this is readable enough and gallops along at a decent pace. Unfortunately, the characters didn't quite ring true for me; Mike seems more of a precocious teenager than a sharp businessman. Ada, the object of his desire, is a vanilla version of Lisbeth Salander who starts promisingly but ultimately has little to do. The abilities conferred by brainocytes consist mostly of having a smart phone in ones head and texting without the need for thumbs - I remained unconvinced about supposed superhuman abilities. There is a lot of telepathic gushing between him and his friends while the adorable rat, the mercenaries and the hired hacker do the real work. Spock the rat though.... what a guy!

Entertaining, but not too impressed
I found the super-rich, super-mamma's boy, super-hero somewhere between a bit annoying to full on juvenile, but the story itself is reasonably entertaining. I can't remember that much, car chases, bad guys, shoot-outs and mamma gets rescued, of course.. Might see where the series goes, but only coz it's free with Kindle unlimited and if I can find nothing better that grabs me. If you like fast-paced, crime-fiction-type stuff with a bit of not-too-futuristic tech thrown in, this might be your thing, but wasn't too impressed myself.

Interesting concept.
The premise of the story gave rise to an expectation of much hard science fiction, the category I chose it from. However, the subject matter is poorly explored and too much of the book is common social interaction. I'm half way through and will probably finish it, in case it improves. At this stage, I'm not likely to read a sequel.

Blurring the line between Scince fact and fiction.
I liked this book a lot.. it was intelligent, creative, suspenseful with a clear exposition of the technical subject matter and excellent characterisation. Having recently suffered from reading a load of over-hyped, chick-lit tosh, this was a breath of fresh air. Dima Zales has a new fan.

Funny and engaging!
I can't remember the last time I read a book so engaging, clever and so in tune with my sense of humour. If you don't fall in love with this book by page 40 I'd be very surprised. The protagonist is sooo easy to care about and the people in his life too by extension. Please read! You won't regret it! Looking forward to see how the next one pans out and actually going try out the author's other series.

great read
not the sort of story I would usually red but the action is non stop. An excellently thought out story but rather violent. Loved it!

Surprisingly good.
This was a surprisingly good book for me, the action was excellent, the description of the technology was great and it kept it going right until the end. I really enjoyed it. A real wild ride that was compatible with my inner nerd
