The non-isolated Orion units are just voltage converters; they lack the multistage battery charging profiles necessary to precisely charge some types of batteries. If an unprofiled (brute force) voltage converter is improperly applied to the wrong type battery, it can damage your battery. That said, I do have a non-isolated Orion converter floating a LEAD ACID battery at 13.7 volts, and it's fine because lead acid is very forgiving. But to charge my LITHIUM batteries, which are much more picky (and dangerous), I very much needed this type of precision and this type of charger. So it's much more than a galvanic/ground isolation issue.
