This is not an average movie, but historical events played by some of the best actors in Korean cinema, such as Hwang Jung Min. Be prepared for a balanced view of what transpired in WWII, for those who had no voice.The Japanese are extremely lucky as their nation was left intact unlike Germany, and once again Korea had to pay the price of having its nation divided in two by the major powers. This was partially due to Japanophiles like MacArthur, who was known to love Japanese culture and its brothels. The story of the relationship between Korea and Japan is not over...

So I paid to watch on Amazon and now is for free on Netflix.Amazing movie if u want good story and plus learn about the Korean/Japanese important history I defnetly recommend this binge movie.I like to watch over and over again.

What people can do when they unite against a common enemy. Strangers learned love and respect for each other.

Incredible film about bravery and resilience. I appreciate this work for keeping history alive and hope Japan will apologize for their atrocities committed against Korea. The acting and action are just superb. It's gut wrenching but important to know.

Its a great movie. This bring back memories of world war 2. I saw three lead korean actors. They so immerse in their roles. Very well portrayed. The scenes of atrocities, betrayal, abuse, deceit in war cannot be forgotten. I like the way the story ended with a child crying, symbolizing the trauma of war and the memories will never be forgotten. The bravery of men and women who died in that war is cannot be forgotten. I hope this movie will make the younger generation appreciate their freedom today. Without the deaths of fellow Koreans, Korea will not able to enjoy what they have now. Thank you for sharing this historic movie to us. Great acting Song Joong Ki. You did it again.

I really enjoyed this but it took some patience. The story jumps around a bit and :1) if your not a fan of subtitles I don't recommend. There is a lot of dialogue and it's very fast at times and while your enjoying the fascinating cinema.. well you'll miss a lot and have to rewind some, as I did.2) There are some "oh shi*, I'll never be able to un-look that" scenes. They aren't prolonged but seeing a young woman being rolled over a bed of nails, even for 5 seconds might sicken some viewers. There's a rape scene.. not graphic but it's there.As a long time fan of Asian cinema I AM NOT an Asian historian by any chance and while this this seems to be based on true events, I have no understanding of the history between Japan and Korea..Kim Soo-Ahn will make you smile and cry! Without her this film would be something entirely different.I'd rent, not buy.. if that's an option for you.

The three lead actors are among South Korea's most talented and loved, and the story of what Japan did to Korea is true (enslavement, rape, and mass murder, just as they inflicted on Nanking, China), a story that many Americans don't know about our ally. There are some plot gaps and sequencing gaffes creating a cut and paste effect in a few scenes. But the film is well worth watching because of its themes, both historic and dramatic, and because of the twists, intrigues, betrayals, and heroism of this Korean story set in the face of the horrors of war and occupation. The film opens and closes in black and white, except at the end a spectral bit of horrifying color followed by the anguished face of the child. It follows a thrilling yet heartbreaking action sequence and closes with an elegiac triumph soaked in grief. This is, after all, a war story. There is a reason why Asians, especially the Koreans, have captured the world's attention while Hollywood continues to slide. They have tremendous talent, imagination, brilliance, and expertise along with a thousand-year history of culture, ideas, and experience. And because they are that good.

Wow! It is an excellent movie filled action, heart, and determination. A few of my favorite Korean actors are in this movie, and they did a fantastic job. Although the film shows many horrible events, I was touched by the strength of a people fighting and sacrificing while trying to get home.I do believe it needed to be in two parts to have made some scenes clearer to those who do not know the history. This has encouraged me to do some research. We should all learn a little more about each other.

I normally leave the film reviewing to others, but I need to comment on this movie. It is amazing! It is a stunning and mind searching film. The direction by Ryoo Seung-Wan places him in the top echelon of the worlds best. The detail and the craftsmanship that went into the design and making of this film is of a standard that Hollywood needs to follow. A piece of untold history that dare I say should be played to Japanese audiences. All the actors are superb. The action scenes are some of the best I have ever seen. A movie to watch many times. RJC

Unique & different theme to "war film drama". Its a taut suspenseful plot -seeking a spy' behind enemy lines" but can he be found & at what cost in terms of lives lost.? Set against the backdrop of stunning & realistic action scenes & photography lies an original & excellent film.

A very good movie. A must see for Asian film fans.
