Spiral Season 6 begins with the shocking discovery of a dismembered human torso in a pile of garbage in the 20th arrondissement in Paris. Police Captain Laure Berthaud returns from maternity leave to reunite with her colleagues Gilou and Tintin, and together they tackle the complex investigation. The trail leads them to a northern suburb where Laure's mentor Commissioner Herville was transferred, and where the team will face off against institutional corruption and organized crime in a neighborhood devastated by poverty and delinquency. Meanwhile, a high-profile criminal trial tempts lawyer Josรฉphine Karlsson, and Judge Roban faces a rapidly escalating health crisis. This new season pushes every character to their limit and forces them all to question long-standing affiliations and beliefs.

Not a bad series but soooo grim...
I've watched every season and I've enjoyed them. But this season the stories are just not all that interesting. It's also a very dark depressing series. Nobody ever seems to smile or be happy and in this season every main character seems to undergo life-shattering disasters, from disease, criminality to rape. It's also hard to root for any of these cops since they cut corners so much, routinely breaking into apartments without warrants, for example. The detective Giroux, played by the always superb Thierry Godard, discovers 12 gold bars hidden in a criminal gang's home and he pockets 2 of them. Later for complicated and not entirely clear to me reasons, he has to return them to the low level gang associate who stole the other 10. He and his boss, Laure (Caroline Proust) force the guy to go to the gang and return all 12, saying that he was "holding the bars" for the gang, despite his warnings that the gang won't believe this story. Sure enough, a bit later Giroux and Laure find the petty thief's tortured and mutilated corpse in a trash dump. They don't seem particularly bothered by this. We supposed to root for such police officers?Laure gave premature birth to a baby who's touch-and-go in a NICU and then Judge Roban, the sole bastion of truth and justice, is diagnosed with a brain tumor. Josephine (Audrey Fleurot, an actress who almost alone justifies watching any drama in which she appears) is roofied and raped ostensibly by another lawyer. I haven't entirely finished watching this season but unless one of the later episodes has the squad collectively winning the lottery and all finding their true love, I think it's safe to say that grimness imbues this series. If things improve by the end I'll update my post and reconsider my rating.Bottom line, it's a good French police drama, the scenes in Paris are interesting and it has Thierry Godard and Audrey Fleurot going for it. I just wish the writers could let up on the downer atmosphere just a bit...PS I finished the season and it does improve towards the end and gets very intense. I raised my rating to 4 stars as a result. It's still grim as heck though. The only positive result is Laure's premature baby graduates from the NICU and it looks like she's going to be involved in her life. But then one of the cliffhanger endings is Laure running from the hospital seemingly "abandoning" her child, not to mention the Judge possibly terminally ill and Josephine on trial for murder. Uplifting, this is not! But it is pretty pretty pretty good...

Voulez vous tuer ce soir?
One of the best series ever, set in a gritty Paris infrequently visited by tourists. The eighth and final season was just released to which I look forward in sadness; I want it to go on forever. Caroline Proust is excellent as Laure, the chief officer, along with Thierry Godard, as tough guy and former coke-head Gilou. Highly recommended.

Darker Every season. Well worth watching as usual.
As usual, the stories are engrossing. The Show is full of liars and police and government ineptitude and crookedness.Josephine goes off the deep end, and the judge gets brain cancer. Laure Is crazy as a bedbug, and Gilou shows too much skin.Where these crazy people come from and where they are going is never clear until the very end. Unfortunately, this season ends in a cliffhanger, and we have to wait till the next season to find out how all these issues are resolved. This show gets darker every season.

May have โjumped the sharkโ
I am a big fan of Spiral. However, I did find that this season is starting to exhibit the same problems as other successful series (i.e., the writers are having problems coming up with plausible scenarios, having previously exhausted all their creativity in earlier seasons). I will be reluctant to buy the inevitable Season 7.

Not as good as the previous seasons
Season 6 is more about personal lives and relationships (Laure Berthaud's baby, her team members, Judge Roban, etc.) than about crime. The plots are not very interesting: two criminals who want to become respected businessmen (and will probably succeed); a young girl kidnapped to be sold to a man who wants to marry a virgin; Josephine Karlsson gets raped and gets even (enough suspense left for another season). It is turning into a soap opera, with some crime thrown in; I will not buy Season 7: enough is enough.

Spiral is a great series with French subtitles
The only problem would be for those who don't like subtitles but I love this series. It's much more adult subject matter than other shows of this genre but it's very well done. I wish this had been in the video instead of only available in DVD as my DVD player is on the fritz.
