In order for it to work well for you, it is just a good idea to reapply it regularly. I went to a 2 week interval and this seemed to be the best for my surroundings. In the later summer I had to be more diligent because the woods and meadows and fields were turning brown due to lack of water and food for the deer gets scarce, making my watered gardens (and planters on my deck) that more desirable. Trust me, it's not my favorite thing to have to spend 2 hours going around and spraying my plants and yes it takes some time to do it. There's no getting out of it if you want to keep deer from eating all of your flowers and Yes, I suppose you could consider this a spendy product, but in reality, I probably used at most a gallon and a half in 10 months.
