I bought it as hand luggage for flights, and it's OK as long as you don't fill the two smaller outer pockets. That way it comes in at 10" (25cm) depth which fits for most airlines. I have a luggage strap to keep it tight. I wasn't stopped by any attendants but did my omn check in the BA luggage sizers and it fitted fine. It is comfortable as a back pack, and as a cyclist I found it a roomy sack in which I could carry a laptop, projector and cables, raingear and organise reading material and have room to spare.
