Q: Did anyone have a problem dubbing vcr tape to dvd?

Not Here, works great. It will not dub tapes that have Macrovision copy protection, if that's what you mean. Other than that, it works great.

Q: When i put a tape in, it takes the tape in and instead of playing it it shuts off. when i turn it back on it ejects the tape. what's going on here?

better bring your unit to a certified repair center your vcr part of the unit is malfunctioning and needs to be repaired.

Q: Can I pre-set 1 or more timers and cable channels to record from TV?

This Unit does not have a TUNER, with that said you won't be able to automatically set stations to record! To do that you would need a Unit that has a built in TV Tuner so you can set different station & programs to record. Hunt for another one.
