Poor design nets poor results.
I love my Shun knives but this sharpener is trash. Getting anything close to a razor sharp edge is impossible with this thing. I sent my Shun 7" Classic Santoku back to Kai to get resharpened, days before buying this sharpener. By the time I got my knife back from Kai and it needed sharpened again my return window had closed.Myself and two other professional Chefs tried it out and agreed it was garbage, which is exactly where it went once I learned it was too late to return it. It is a very poor design. It feels cheap and the honing stage isn't even electric.Save your money, this thing is a waste.

This sharpener will destroy your expensive Shun cutlery!
Update!!!!This thing is ruining ALL of my Shuns. See the pictures. It chips the blades severely! And Kai makes Shun knives! So I trusted them. I'm going back to hand sharpening them. Hopefully the manufacturer will read this and somehow offer some kind of reimbursement....This was my original review after the first sharpening.....Works great on my Shun's. Quick and easy. Doesn't work with my Hinkle's very well because of the thick return, so the heel doesn't get sharpened. But if your knives don't have a thick return, definitely get one of these. Perfect angle.

This is not a Kai cutlery product.
I purchased this thinking it was indeed a Kai/Shun cutlery product. The links associated with this go directly to other Shun/Kai knives. The Kai cutlery used to sell an electric water stone sharpener but they have stopped advertising/selling it on their web site. This product does not even have a youtube posting claiming it is associated with Shun cutlery. Do your research. I returned it after discovering these things for myself.I did not open the box. Thanks for all the reviews. It saved me some angst.

DO NOT ORDER :: BROKEN 2x WHEN DELIVERED NEW
Bought Kai AP5301US Knife Sharpener - 2 times, separate ordersBROKEN 2x WHEN DELIVERED - DID NOT EVEN GET TO TEST- Great packaging and delivery- LOVE ALL THINGS KAI / SHUN / ETC.- SO DISAPPOINTED THIS DID NOT WORK...- Delivered and opened- Plugged in, Power button light came on- Did not start / run / make noise / work in any way - TWICE!- Opened top parts, as if to clean as described in instructions- White ceramic sharpening stone was BROKEN --- TWICE!- turns out the sharpening stone is two pieces: 1 that is attached to the motor, 1 "top" piece has the angle on it- They are glued together, but the glue dries out, and they separate...in other words would not spin with the bottom motor piece- SO DISAPPOINTED - I REALLY WANTED THIS TO BE MY SHARPENER- BTW - Amazon return process was simple, quick, and accurate. TWICE! (Thank you!)

NOT recommend to anyone.
it is very bad product.did not started at all for a long time.Being started, it produced terrible noise. The oven inside is not balanced. It damaged my shun knife's blade.Impossible to keep the sharpening angle.Very disappointed, because the unit called Kai, that is the well known and promised company name, but the sharpening quality does not fit to Shun and Kai knives blades.I returned the unit, but received neither apology or support, nor any help with my knives blades..

easy to use, don't get for non shun knives
works great on all of my shun premiere knives. does not work on a few of my other knives due to the handle shape/size so buyer beware if you have some other knives you may not be able to sharpen the heel of the knife. super easy to use, just run it through and you're done in 30 seconds. i think this will save me a ton of money paying someone else to sharpen. way easier than a whetstone.overall, recommended for shun knives. other knives, look elsewhere.

Bad design doesn’t sharpen full knife length
The sharpener works, and gets the knives reasonably sharp, though not spectacularly so. Unfortunately the plastic guides prevent you from sharpening nearly an inch of blade closest to the handle on thinner knives, as they just don’t fit in deep enough to reach the sharpener. I bought the item because Shun knives sells the same model. Apparently, that doesn’t mean much, as this is a stupid design. I kept it for my larger knives, but can’t recommend.

Knives in worse condition after use
I have very expensive Japanese knives. Sharpener is not easy to use. Tried on different size knives. Knives in worse condition than prior to sharpening. Bottom line is I will be sending knives to a professional knife sharpener. Should have done that in the beginning.

needs knives with a large shoulder at the hilt...hence 3 stars, not 4
for my knives that have a large enough shoulder at the hilt (Kikuichi WGA17-6-6 small cleaver, MAC MSK65 170mm Santoku, MAC MTH-80 Chef's knife, MAC MSL-105 270mm slicer, but not my '70's series Gerber Balmung Slicer/ Fork set [ shallow shoulder])...it was very good...dress the grind with a steel (or Ceramic steel), and the result is excellent...smaller knives...nope...reverted back to my Firestone Model 1901 for the smaller "utility" knives, likemy Carrier Cook's Knife set, by Butler of Sheffield, and my favourite... the "True Edge" Ontario-Knife Co. "Old Hickory"...recommended, for the larger "well-heeled" knives...
