Great vise, but arrived BENT!
This thing is a beast. I really love it EXCEPT for the fact that it arrived with the screw handle bent. And when I mean bent, I mean BENT. I don't know in the world this thing could have shipped. It's bent to the point where it cannot slip through to the other side. It must have taken thousands of pounds of force to bend it like that. The thing is very heavy. I hauled it from the porch to my basement and got it all set up before I noticed the bent part. I am going to attempt to bend it back myself (though I doubt I'll be able to do it); I will not be returning it. I don't want to bust my back carrying it around any more. VERY disappointed. I'd run from Yost Vises on Amazon. I would never buy another one.UPDATE: 20 Jan 2018. I contacted Yost the day after I received the vise and they sent me a brand new handle immediately. I only had to give them order information and a picture of the damage. I actually received the part the next day and it fit perfectly. Great customer service. I changed my 3-star rating to a 5-star rating.

Worth every penny!
It was a difficult decision to spend this much on a vice, with so many "imported" items at ⅓ the price. Purchase price on Amazon was far below any competition at $282...However, it is my preference to buy "MADE in USA" when ever I can.I also bought this sight unseen - took a chance on the name "Yost" - this is one of their least expensive vises, this size, "MADE in USA""Made" is intentionally in caps - due to the new term "ASSEMBLED" in USA, used frequently by many companies! This vise is exceptionally sturdy and obviously very well made - you can feel the quality right out of the box.The swivel locks properly - the downfall of most imported vises. It is very versatile, with 2 anvil surfaces, reversible jaws (smooth/serrated) the front Jaw assembly can be reversed to give a massive opening (11 ± inches)I have absolutely no doubts this will serve me for the rest of my life - and beyond.I am very happy with my purchase, and would highly recommend it to the DIY enthusiast, mechanics and most machine shops.

Great but needed a slight modification
I bought this vice after much research and was not disappointed. Very high quality and made in USA! Arrived in perfect condition. The packaging from Yost is exceptional. Would have gotten 5 stars, but the handle was really stiff to turn even with no load. I removed the spring on the handle and put a spacer in there instead and it works perfectly. The precision on the jaw is excellent - at full extension there is almost no play. This is really a machinist level vice at a great price. I would buy it again.Just an update - it is very difficult to get to customer service at Yost. And the Yost website is not good - lots of missing information, no prints, no videos, etc. However, they can make a good vice!

Made in USA, excellent tool as well!
Never owned a vise. Got kind of tired of needing an extra pair of hands and started researching vises. Didn't want to spend twice as much on a Wilton. I suppose I could have, but there seems to be no need. This Yost was highly recommended by pretty much anyone who came into contact with one, and even the tool snobs on Garage Journal. Its a big hunk of metal. It has easily replaceable jaws. It holds things tightly, runs smoothly, and swivels like a ballerina. If you've got something to bolt it to, you are in business.A good friend of mine at work who also is a DIY-er made fun of me for dropping three bills on a honkin' vise. Said I'd never use it. I find that I use it all the time. Third hands are valuable, especially when my other option is a rather unreliable four year old boy ;)

very nice vise
As soon as I opened the box, I knew I had a gem of a vice. I already knew it was a heavy son-of-a-gun. The machined surfaces are flawless, and I really like the 360 degree swivel. My old craftsman only swivelled about 240 degrees, and only had one lock down handle (the new one has 2). I thought I was going to miss the vertical v-notches in the main jaws, but while not as deep as on my old vise, it does have notches, on both ends. I am still in the process of permanently monting the vise, so I have only played with it to check it out. I was going to give it 4 stars for that reason, but I have inspected it enough to be pretty sure it is the finest I've ever used, and decades ago, I did work for a few years in a small machine shop with several different vises. If my opinion changes, I will repost. I have a couple of projects waitng, one of which destroyed my old vise...okay, I was the destroyer, not the project.

This vise made in USA is no longer available from Yost.
Yost quit making the 865-DI and the 880-DI back in 2017. Any 865 or 880 vise are now made in China. Be careful when ordering. You order the made in USA vise and if it is shipped from Yost, it will now be a 865-D2 made in China.

Works great, but doesn't come looking new
Paid more for the made in USA product, but when it came to my house, it looked used. Some dings and it almost seemed to be rusting. Exchanged for another and got no rust, but still seemed a little dinged up. Works great, but doesn't come looking new.

Best Vice for the Money
I was looking for a pretty big vise, Wiltons for over $1000 are out of the question.I don't use my vise as an anvil but often need to hold large items in the shop. The Jaws open FARRRRR and are wide enough to hold just about anything. One alteration I made was to put teflon bushings between the threaded rod and the vise for smoothness.Love this vise!!!

it's nice to actually buy an item made in North America ...
This is a high quality vise, at what I think [to be] a very reasonable price point.High quality casting and machine work... jaws are precisely aligned and parallel. And yes, it's nice to actually buy an item made in North America (USA in this case).A couple of little nit picks... (and they are little). The lead screw 'anti lash' spring preload was a touch heavy for my liking.I'd be the first to admit that this probably wouldn't matter to 95% of users... I'm just stupid fussy.* Nice to [be able to] 'one finger freewheel' a vise until having neared the final clamp position.A quick disassembly and shortening of the spring by approximately 0.100" + grease/lubrication got things pretty much perfect.Should note... did careful 'end flat' grinding with constant water quenching to preserve spring temper. Also, the 'anti-pinch' rubbers... I wasn't long in making those things leave the building. lolAmazon did a great job of packaging (double boxed) and their free shipping service was surprisingly quick. The entire transaction (a high quality item along with great service) deserves a word of praise!Definitely Five Stars on this one.

Je trouve le métal un peu mince et le système de rotation accroche un peu. L'étau est extrêmement bien conçue et est un plaisir à utiliser.

Arrived in a thick card board box and the vise didn't have a scratch on it. It's built like a tank and if you take reasonable care of it, should last a 100 years. Worth the money.
