Lifesaver
Bought one almost ten years ago, (Amazon begged for a review...) and this thing legitimately saved my life one time! Still working, although the mirror did end up falling off. Probably cause I took this thing through some rough stuff!Definitely worth it if you need one, just buy the right one! (I bought it for a college class and needed the full 360° not the quad! Professor was unimpressed, I somehow still passed!)

What to gift a new geologist?
When I graduated from university as a newly minted geologist, I ran right out and bought myself a new Brunton transit as a professional instrument. Now, that a relative has followed the same path, I am gifting a Brunton transit to her for her field work.Brunton transits aren't inexpensive, but you get professional quality instruments for your money and mine has lasted decades, including some spectacular drops and inadvertent mishaps.I no longer do field work, but it still resides in my Jeep with appropriate topo maps because unlike a GPS, it never needs batteries, is pretty much indestructible, and has always worked under heavy tree cover or limited sky view.

Great performance/price/ease of use
This replaces a 20-year-old Brunton Pocket Transit that I lost in the field. It's essential field gear for me, mounted on their tripod socket and Jacob staff. Great performance/price/ease of use. We also have a Warren-Knight field compass (larger, more expensive) that is much slower to stabilize and use. Potentially more precision using that, but much slower. The Brunton is sturdy, well made (in the US of A) - one of those quietly satisfying products that simple performs the way it should, into the foreseeable future, without becoming obsolete..

Professional compass for Geologists, Engineers and Artillery
A totally professional level compass, it is my third one. The first one got, ah, not returned it fell over a cliff, and we couldn't find it later... I still have the second one and I bought a third one. They last forever, you are more likely to lose it than to break it.

Accurate and Precise
Bought this for my Field Geology course, so I wouldn't have to use the ones provided by the university. Works great, and is very accurate and precise.

The Gold standard since 1800s
I bought my young geologist bride a "Brunton" (that's what everybody calls the Brunton transit!) 26 years ago. She has made mucho geological maps, strat columns, fossil quarry maps, etc. Wind, rain, hail, snow and other vagaries of Wyoming weather has not dimmed the rock solid character of this instrument. She has even used it to hang picture frames :) AGAIN....locally made in Riverton, WY! You'll only need one....forever!
