It works well on the wrist but it has to ...
It works well on the wrist but it has to be charged every day so there are times when you do not have the use of it. Also it was very hard to get it to pair with an iPad or Surface pro 2 and after two weeks it lost its pairing and I have not been able to get it to pair again so I cannot track my progress over the long run.

Sadly, I was disappointed...
This is an item that was offered by vine.I was very excited to see Epson PULSENSE PS-500 Heart Rate Monitor with Activity Tracking for iOS offered to me for review. I ha been wanting this type of device for a while. I read the description quickly and there was some mention of android, which was the type of phone I had at the time, which was a few months ago. I regretfully asked that Vine not send the item, but it arrived anyway. I had been missing my iPhone terribly since changing carriers and phones. The combination of guilt ( serious hang up of mine), bad cell phone service, and wanting to go back to an iPhone anyway sent me off to change carriers and get an iPhone. That was a lot of information that you didn't need, but I felt compelled to explain. SO, moving on to the review. I have been using the Epson Pulse PS-500 for about a month now. There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to figuring out how to use it, at least there was for me. I had a very difficult time getting it to pair with my iPhone 5S. I found it very fiddly, and it didn't connect as easily as I had hoped. It took quite a few tries and was very fiddly.Once the two devices were paired. Things went pretty smoothly. The wrist monitor does exactly what it promises to do ans monitors activity and heart rate. I am not convinced that the distance and activity monitoring is accurate. Devices worn by my friends as well as a route measured in my car for distance agree with each other, but not with my Epson. This shows the distance to be less.Sleep monitoring is something that I have not been able to really test, as I find this device to be very clunky and honestly uncomfortable. I have never been able to leave it on all night long.Calorie burning doe not agree with My Fitness Pal, which I have used on and off for some time, and I feel that it quite accurate. Although I would love to believe that it was the Epson that was accurate, since it shows more calories burned, I just don't believe it's the case.So...all in all, if I were to purchase an item to monitor activity and heart rate, calories and so on, this would not be my first choice. Even without knowing about what I see as inaccuracies, it is clunky and uncomfortable.edited to add:It does not seem to sync with my fitness pal, at least I haven't been able to do so.

Very close to perfect
The reason I am giving this a 4 star and not a 5 star is the difficulty of pairing the device to my iPhone 6 plus. I have to turn my phone off and restart each time for it to pair. Once paired the device works perfectly! I purchased this to mainly keep track of my heart rate for medical reasons, however I am using it for much more. I love being able to see my progress throughout the day in several areas. I have found it to be very accurate in most. I am very happy with my purchase and hope Epson issues an update that fixes the pairing issue.

Not with a Samsung Galaxy 5
I have tried most of the wrist sensors and have, after unsuccessful trials, sent them all back. I had high hopes for the Epson PS-500 but I will, alas, visit the UPS returns center tomorrow with the PS-500 all packaged up. It looks nice, feels comfortable and is reasonably priced (sort of). However, it will not sync with my Samsung Galaxy 5, no matter how hard I tried. Also, apparently I did not sleep last night nor did I work out yesterday even though I did both. It did track my two mile walk very accurately but unfortunately I burned no calories doing this. The heart rate monitor is accurate from time to time, although I question a heart rate of 110 (my resting is in the 60s) while sipping a Scotch.Operator error? Maybe, but given the fact that I get some measurements and not others, maybe not.Back to the search.bw

Good, but not great
Had my watch for 2 weeks now. Overall it does what it is suppose to, but has some issues. I think most of the issues are software and not hardware, so hopefully someone will make an app that works better than Epson's. Especially as ability to use other apps is the only advantage it will have over the Basis Peak. In fact the issues with Basis not allowing the use of other applications is the only reason I am not returning the Pulsense and getting a Basis.HR- Pretty accurate in low & fat burning zones. Not that great in aerobic/anaerobic zones especially when transitioning from lower heart rates such as when starting an interval or doing activities that involve wrist/arm movement. Resting heart rate calculation in software is iffy at best. However, I could tell that my basal heart rate increased when I caught a cold last week.Calories- Horrible. Way over estimates burned calories. Starts with a base of 2,000 calories/day then adds on calories burned from any activities. You can't change the base from 2,000 calories/day to match your inactive basal metabolic rate, hence the software always overestimates how many calories you burn.Sleep- Inaccurate. Can't tell the difference if you're reading right before going to bed, or sleeping. Only figures out that I have woken up and even walked around before going back to bed about half of the time. Light/Deep distinction appears to be based on that night's sleep alone, so if there is one night that you are tossing and turning all night it will consider that 'light' while any time you are actually asleep 'deep' while the next night you might take a sleeping pill and not move the entire night and everything will be considered 'light'.Alarm- Goes off once and only once regardless of if you don't wake up, turn it off, don't turn it off ect.Charge- I charge it for about 30-45 minutes a day while taking a shower.Sync/Data Transfer- Still haven't gotten it to sync with my ipad. Dealt with online customer service, they didn't know what to do, so I have to call customer service at some point. Also, every time I sync it (every day) I get a red error exclamation mark and something along the lines of, "Abnormal data detected. This data was not synced. Please contact customer service if this continues to happen". I can't tell what data didn't sync, but I do plan on contacting customer service. I did learn that if data syncing is interrupted, it will resume and data is not lost, at least when syncing by the charger.Comfort- I find it comfortable. You really don't have to wear it very tight unless you are exercising. In fact mine is looser than how I wear normal watches due to it having to not touch the wrist bone. However I tend to wear normal watches snug. I had no issue with sleeping with it and have had no skin irritation which is somewhat surprising as I have sensitive skin and have worn the watch at least 23 hours everyday for the past 2 weeks.
