The overall plant has a very upright form, yet the individual branches weep heavily. Over time the plant will slowly show signs of twisting and curling. The fine textured foliage is a blue green color. The foliage is needle-like, flattened in cross-section, and dark blue-green above, and blue-white below. Bright green new growth in spring followed by deep green foliage in summer. The interest mainly is in the trees form and texture. Cultivated at Bruns Nursery in Germany. The species was originally discovered near the village of Zaovine on the Tara Mountain in 1875, and named by the Serbian botanist Josif Pan. Cultivation: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Relatively drought tolerant although it prefers moist soils. Review: My opinion is this is for those with a greenhouse and lots of time. - All four plants arrived tiny in fair condition but very dry. They were so tiny, so much smaller than I thought they would be. All four in their pots fit on a dinner plate with room to spare. They were just live twigs. We gave them water and set them on the porch in a protected area for a few days. After a week or so, we thought it safe to plant as they were acclimated to the climate so we planted all the four we ordered. Unfortunately, not a single one survived the winter. They remained green for approximately two months before winter snow but were dead in March when the snow melted. We were hopeful and continued to care for them for months just in case the roots had survived. We gave up last month (October) and removed the dry dead twigs before this winter arrives. Perhaps a greenhouse and years of patience they would have grown to a 3 foot plant. It would take 20 or more years to be the tree. Review: 8-10” tall. - Allow for your expectations to be realistic because this comes as a very small tree.
