I was recently birthday shopping for a nephew of mine, and wondered if they still made these. To my surprise, not only are ornithopters still made, but this seems 100% identical to the one I had as a kid, even down to the packaging. I guess if it isn't broke, don't fix it. After spending an afternoon flying it around, our little bird made several crash landings, and was totally fine. My only complaint is the tail seems a bit flimsy, particularly in the hinge where you angle it.
