This is a very good machine at a affordable price.
If you are looking for a affordable laptop and need it the next day this is a good machine. I'm a CNC programmer and had to work from home for a couple weeks and this laptop ran MasterCAM, which is 3D modeling and manufacturing software with not much lag. The RAM is only 4GB so I thought it might be a problem and ordered a second 4GB card just incase for $40 and it's even better. This machine has a second open port for memory expansion up to 16GB according to Crucial Memory and their online system scanner. That would be a bit pricy but it's doable. I just bought my girlfriend a Lenovo notebook from Walmart for about the same price and hers doesn't have a second slot and the processor speed is nearly half of this HP. There are newer, probably better ones you can get for about another $100 but if you don't need (or like myself want) a touch screen then I would have no problem suggesting this notebook to anyone. Adding the second memory card was relatively easy with the help of a YouTube video. All in all, I gave it 5 stars. Affordable, powerful and available the NEXT DAY!!!

Mediocre for the price
This is an example of only getting what you pay for. For less than $300 it’s not bad for a new laptop if you are only using it for web browsing and word processing. Even still, The 4gb ram made this surprisingly slow for a fresh out of the box computer. I ended up having to swap to 8 gb ram, which made a huge difference, but after the cost could have just spent $400 on a better computer. Also for me the number keypad makes hand placement for typing very awkward and takes a lot of getting used to

It's okay
I got this laptop two or three years ago because the price was good and it looked like it would last. It almost died on me and I had to buy a new laptop. I would not recommend this laptop. It is incredibly slow and not worth the money. After just two to three years it has turned into and absolute piece of junk. It was good for the first year, so if you want a short-term laptop, this is the one for you. If you want something that will last, spend a little more money and find a better one.

The review by C. John Smith is spot on. I got this as a gift and was disappointed.I ended up wiping the hard drive and installed Ubuntu (Linux) OS. 100 times better.

Unless you plan on spending $$$ upgrading the RAM and adding an SSD then this is NOT a good buy.
Gonna be honest here.. I bought this laptop (for $230 w/ Tax) thinking it would be an awesome secondary travel laptop replacement for my old Toshiba Satellite P755-S5320 with a 3rd Gen i3, 8GB of DDR3 RAM and an 840 EVO. The Toshiba for some reason is still very snappy despite having a base level 5 Gen old processor. The Toshiba was around $650 IIRC when I bought it new many years back. I figured this HP laptop would outdo it with everything it has.. Much newer processor (2011 vs 2016) & GPU, DDR4 RAM, bluetooth, better wifi chip, lighter & thinner. Also, I absolutely love how small the power brick is, it's tiny!! At least half the size of the Toshiba's.On paper everything points towards the HP one-upping the 7 year old Toshiba in every category. So as soon as I got the HP I went and did a fresh start of Windows 10 which completely removed all of the pre-installed HP bloatware and brought the PC back to a clean state. I then started disabling all of the unnecessary Windows 10 crapola. And re-downloaded some of the HP drivers that were removed when doing the "fresh start".Now it was ready.. I erased everything from the 840 EVO (that was in the Toshiba) and then swapped the SSD into the HP to get the ultimate budget laptop. Now it should be amazing. But it isn't. With less than 10 chrome tabs open the fan is on full (it rarely ever went on in my Toshiba) and the CPU is hard at work. Also with several tabs open Chrome consumes about 60-70% of the 4GB of RAM. (I knew 4GB wasn't going to be enough, but damn.. I thought DDR4 RAM would at least handle things better). The laptop is noticeably slower than my old Toshiba. I wasn't expecting godly performance from a <$250 laptop. But I was expecting it to be at least as good as a several year old laptop with an entry level CPU, older RAM and the same SSD. The only thing I see that could be the problem is that though both processors are dual core, the i3-2330M (yeah a 2nd Gen i3) that's in the Toshiba has 4 threads vs the AMD's 2 threads.. In all the comparisons I entered online the AMD processor beats the i3 in every single category except the thread count. Also the HP does not connect to my 5Ghz connection which I thought it would be able to since it can claims to be able to connect to a Wireless-AC router. That is pretty disappointing. Also, FYI upgrading the AMD is a bit of a nightmare, my old Toshiba has separate compartments for the RAM and HDD slot which makes upgrading a fkn breeze..But upgrading the HP is a bit of a process. First you have to take out the screws everywhere on the bottom. Then take the battery out and take those 2 screws out. Then under each rubber foot you have to pry up the rubber feet (while also taking off the adhesive that sticks the rubber feet in place (crappy design)) and unscrew each one. Then flip the laptop back over, open up the top and pry around the entire perimeter and try not to damage the plastic. Second time around I can probably do it relatively easily, but figuring it out the first time was not fun.Hopefully, maybe if I buy an 8GB DDR4 stick and up my RAM to 12GB and maybe if I use the laptop a lot more it will be better optimized and start functioning better.. And maybe I can find a way for it to recognize the 5Ghz band that it should be able to connect to. And maybe the fan will stop running all the damn time when the system adjusts to everything.. But honestly, I'm not sure.If you are buying this laptop with no intention to upgrade it then no, do not buy it. It's a really bad buy unless you are willing to spend a couple hundred more dollars to upgrade it.. But at that point, you could just buy a better laptop.. You get what you pay for I guess. This thing boots hella fast though with the 840 EVO installed, so I've got that going for me.Edit: Jesus christ the battery on this thing is BAD... I have the computer on "better performance" in the Power Mode when using battery and I got down to 50% battery within 1 hour. That's not good.. At all. I expected a bit better battery life than that. If I put it on "Best Performance" I don't see how I would be able to get more than 2 hours of battery life..Also, the screen is so dim. I'm typing this on my Dell (wish costs 4 times as much so of course it's going to be better) and the difference is crazy. Not just the screen quality. But I just put my phone (Galaxy S7 Edge which has a very bright screen) up to the screen and gauged the brightness level.. When I put my phone down to around 50% brightness the level matched the HP's 100% brightness, whereas my Dell at 100% matches my S7E at around 90%.I will be searching for a new backup laptop and selling this one in the near future. Or maybe I'll keep it just as a "backup backup" laptop that I can bring around wherever and throw around and don't care if it gets damaged, stolen or whatever.
