I don’t recommend this kind of test but I lost my dog after a deer today. He normally has a great recall and has been trained to the whistle but I guess a deer in rutting season is enough to overwhelm anyone’s training. I could see on his GPS (also a good investment) that he was 3 fields and some woodland away by the time the chase ended (he is a small dog with delusions of grandeur so I guess they had quite easily outrun him) so I thought he might finally be capable of hearing me so I blew his whistle and immediately the blip started moving towards me. I kept whistling and sure enough he popped up. I was impressed with the whistle’s performance, less so with my idiot dog’s who has had all off lead privilege revoked until at least the end of rutting season. But it was a useful test of both the limits of his training and the whistle’s carrying ability, which is great.

Not having a very strong voice/shout, I needed something I could use while out walking to call my dog. I had tried 3 different whistles that I found at home, which after the first/second blow on each, my dog (8 month old Duck Tolling Retriever) didn't even look up. After researching I hadn't appreciated there were sooo many different types of whistles. I read that retrievers seemed to be best suited to the particular pitch of 211.5 so I thought I'd try it. First time out armed with my new Acme whistle, I blew it and called Kenzie by name, as she was just disappearing into some thick bush; she immediately came running to me. (of course I gave her a loads of praise and tasty treats for coming back to me straight away). Wondering if this was a one off, I tried it several more times on my walk as I went through the woods and fields. Each time I blew and called her, she looked up and came bounding back, I couldn't believe the difference. Now when we go for a walk, I won't go anywhere without it, and there have been times when I have even had other peoples retrievers come to me when I have blown the whistle calling for Kenzie. The whistle itself, even though it's plastic, feels very strong, robust and up for the task no matter what discipline you decide to do with your dog. I will definitely be getting another one in the same pitch as a spare (but probably a different colour though). This is a good product that I would recommend anyone getting. :D

I have a Labrador who is reasonable good at coming back when called so long as there are no distractions around her. However, as soon as we go down to the field where there are people, other dogs and fallen apples she conveniently turns deaf to my calls. A friend suggested that I try a dog whistle as it is a very different noise to those that they are used to and it can often grab attention where a familiar voice doesn't. This whistle is a couple of inches in length, made from black plastic and it has been sturdy enough for our use at home. It comes with a nylon neck cord attached which is extremely useful as I am forever losing things like this. I just pop it around my neck before leaving the house and it is easy to find when I need to use it quickly. No more having to rummage around in my pockets amongst the treats, poo bags and balls! When blown the whistle makes an extremely high pitched noise which can hurt your ears if blown for too long - it tends to be better to blow it in short spurts both for the sake of your ears and for getting your dog's attention. The sound travels far; my dog can hear it right across a very large field. It is also useful to use when there is a lot of background noise such as traffic, wind or on the beach. Usually when she hears it she does stop what she is doing and look back at me. However, it doesn't guarantee she will come back - but that is not a fault of the whistle, more that I haven't reinforced her training with the whistle. Overall, I have been pleased with the quality of the whistle, I just need to be a bit more consistent in my training with it.

Absolute must for a working dog or a terrier! We have a patterdale who takes her prey drive very seriously. Although shes not working, she seems to think she is! Sometimes I cant always get a perfect whistle (sometimes lips too cold or dry!) So this is perfect, shes learnt the specific pattern I do and always comes back. I did some research for the best working dog whistles and this kept coming out on top! Brilliant price and I think acme is one of the best brands, I reccomend something to hang it off as I keep it in my bag but its easier access around your neck.

Apart from being softer to the touch same whistle as the older version

I bought this to see if we can train our 10-11 year old mongrel (beagle-ish) to respond to it, as he is going quite quickly and quite considerably deaf - vet says it is just old age. We have had to stop letting him off the lead in the park because if he runs off and loses track of where we are, we can't call him back, he just can't hear us. He can certainly hear this, but after a few minutes of the first training session where I was just giving a toot and rewarding him, and then moving away a little and rewarding him when he came towards me when I blew it, he then became frightened of it, I am convinced because he can't tell what direction the noise is coming from. That isn't the whistle's fault, just a result of his encroaching deafness. So, it is going to take some patience... As for the whistle itself, it makes a loud and consistent noise, but I agree with another reviewer, it is an incredibly cheap and light plastic moulding like something out of a cracker. That may be all that is needed, but the price really is taking a liberty - it must cost about 3p to produce.
