MTB Black Steel Stair Riser with 1/2/3/4/5/6/7 Steps

I got a 1-step unit and it works perfectly. BUT, you need to drill THRU the step plank and use a nut on the underside of a stove bolt or a hex head, you can NOT get a ratchet into the underside of the most rear-ward hole position. You will have exposed hex-head bolts (and a fender washer) on the top of the step. If you use a single plank you can attach from the bottom with lags and just skip the rear hole, but if you use two 6'' planks - like many normal DIY deck-builders do - you won't reach the rearward hole. You also need to supply your own 1/4'' lags to attach the step tread/plank. This is a durable and quality unit, and was exactly what I wanted, but theres only one way to attach the planks - you'll see.

I needed some stairs for the back of our deck, and this was a great way to put some up in a short time. The product was designed as a time saver to help people build stairs easily. Only having two steps for me to install made this build easier than cutting my own risers, and the risers have a nice modern look that doesn’t distract from its functionality. The steps are cut from 2”x10” treated lumber, and I used 5/16”x1” stainless steel lag bolts with marine grade washers for the underside of the steps. I would probably use 1 1/2” length in the future, but the 1” worked for this project. I would also use a 2”x12” if doing this again, but the 2”x10” board ended up working out. I pre drilled my holes on the steps and used an 11mm socket to attach the lag bolts to the underside to give a clean look. I have seen many people using various other methods, but this worked well for me. I was able to use bolts on 3 of the 4 holes on the risers to attach the steps, and that gives the steps a solid feel. To attach the stairs to the deck I used 3/8”x2 1/2” stainless steel lag bolts with marine grade washers. I had to dig out one side of the ground due to a slight grade, Overall, it took about two hours of work by myself. I would recommend using someone to help put these in place if you have more than 2 steps. This was manageable for me, but I would definitely recommend a helper to get them in place.

Great price compared to HD! Solid product with a nice finish! There are probably many ways to do this but this is basically how I went about installing the risers. Used 2x12 for nice wide step. Sanded and rounded off all of the edges for a cleaner look before staining and installing on risers. Measured and leveled out for location of risers and temporarily bolted risers to side of deck. Made concrete forms to fit height and width for base of risers and area for sleeve anchors. Fit concrete forms so that the bottom of the risers rested level on top of concrete forms. Oiled inside of concrete forms so that they could be removed after concrete sets up. Oiled bottom of risers to be able to remove them after the cement set up to make fastening the steps a little easier from the bottom of the risers. Set the risers to the side and added concrete to form. Used a hammer to tap along outside of each side of concrete form to remove voids and screeded top of concrete. Loosely placed 3/8”x 2” sleeve anchor in each riser mount hole and into the wet cement to align mounting studs needed to secure bottom of risers. Gently pulled/pushed the stud of each sleeve anchor to check that they were encased in the cement. Checked upper, middle and bottom outside riser measurements to confirm consistent width. Covered top of concrete with plastic to avoid top of concrete drying faster than the middle. Removed the plastic after about 10 days and the the concrete forms after about 14 days. Installed steps and secured to deck and anchor bolts. Looking forward to many years of use!

1) Put gravel or cement blocks or bricks or ? at the bottom to level the ground. Remember, you want that top step from stringer to deck surface to match the height of the stringer steps... 7.5 inches. Add gravel or dig to get that to match. 2) Cut 2"x12" treads (ours are 4' wide) and fasten them with metal washers and deck screws from underneath. 3) Use a level on a tread to mark the exact desired height of holes in the side of the deck. Get the stairs level front to back and side to side. 4) Bolt stringer to the side of the deck. It's easy. Looks nice and neat. Very stable. Built a stand alone set of stairs too. Was a bit harder to create the "wall" for the stringer to fasten to but it's solid as a rock. Can pick up the whole stairwell and move. Looks nice. Is a perfect solution. Added a rail. Handrail screws are now countersunk, filled with wood putty, and varnished so folks don't get splinters. Cedar fence board "wall" on other side is not shown in picture. Everybody loves the standalone stairs. It's a frequently used shortcut that is so much easier than hopping the wall (which the little dog cannot do).

30 some years ago installed some rickety steps that go from side to back yard after putting in a retaining wall for the slope. Was time to make the area nicer and do the steps correctly. These Stringers made the job easy. They came in a sturdy box, Used them figure out the correct landing, rebuilt that and some of the retaining wall, then turned upside down and bolted on the treads - used 2 - 1x6 pressure treated for each tread - spaced then by putting paint stirrers between the boards when marking. Pre-drill the bolt holes. You'll have to hand tighten with wrench - the first bolt because of how close the space is to the angle under the step (I did everything from underneath - you could use carriage bolts to drill thru and mount from top) I used 3/4 in lag bolts. Used a ratchet wrench for the other bolts. Could be done in a day but took me two because I work slow, figuring things out along the way. Mounted to existing header on the retaining wall. Has been up for a month now and no issues. Important to make or have a level and solid landing - Prep the space and you should have no problem working with these.

Very sturdy and easy to install. The steel is solid and feels secure underfoot. We had uneven stone, so we added heavy-duty furniture levellers to adjust the height, and it worked perfectly. Great quality and would buy again!

They are perfect but I don’t know how you would ever use those bolts. I drilled the hole larger and used real screws/ bolts

These stair risers were a perfect addition to our small deck. They came with easy instructions for install and are high quality. Definitely would purchase again.
