Rebel Heart (2) (Dust Lands)

It pulled me in from the start.
Most people who have read this book complain or say they dislike the writing style. Let me tell you, I can understand the fact that it's hard to read and to understand, but for me, instead of the writing keeping me out of the book, it sucked me in. The words are misspelled like a first grader would write them, like they sound. My brain instantly translated the words into something readable. In fact, I didn't even notice them after I got into the book. After reading the first book, I was drooling. I loved the writing, the style, Saba's character, everything. But when I realized that the second book had come out, I started to get nervous in thinking that Young would guide this book down the teenagery, roll-my-eyes love lane. Oh, how wrong I was. Yes, there was a "love dilemma," but it wasn't the usual, it actually made me surprised and got pretty intense. So, thank you Young, for completely making it the amazing book that it is.In REBEL HEART, Young took my breath away, the there-for-too-few-pages characters from BLOOD RED ROAD came back and stayed, they weren't any different from in the first pages they came, Maev, A strong, proud, independent girl, who digs her heels in and won't budge, who has strong opinions and will forever be a hijacker Free Hawk. They were the same people who they always were. Well, take that back, [Lugh] changes, but I guess that's to be expected, or maybe that's how he's always been and Saba has just opened her eyes. The plot-line snared me in seconds, It takes wonderful, drastic turns, that somehow fit together perfectly and leave you wondering how Saba started by heading for the Big Water out west, and then ended up far from it, instead among rebels and Free Hawks. You meet characters who you love or hate. Your Saba's mind and thoughts, you think like her in every way, Moira Young directed Saba's choices like what we would do; and instead of being a character, Saba became a person.Molly Pratt reached my expectations and went farther. Maev left me with tears in my eyes, (again, thank you, Young.) Adventurous little Emmi became more mature and interesting. [Spoiler]With Jack, Young didn't even allow a peep of doubt that he had become a Tonton.[End spoiler] When the book ended, it left me at a cliff about to jump, satisfied and ready at the very edge.I lapped up the pages. So why did I rate this book a four 1/2 when I sound like I loved it to a five? It's because, Moira Young needed to go just one tiny fraction of a millimeter to make me completely satisfied. I loved it, god, I loved it to the stars and back one hundred times, but I felt like I still needed something that wasn't there, and I'm hoping with fingers crossed the third book will meet that expectation, (and go farther.)

This book is an amazing travel that goes from dull ...to. INCREDIBLY AMAZING!
[as written by me on goodreads]Rebel heart is like a rocket flying into the space. The book like nothing, soft, dull, nothing happening, engines off. I can even say that the book can be really boring at some parts at the beginning, reason of why it took me so long to read it. But then a friend told me to keep on reading it, that it got better with the pages. That’s when it happened. The book started to get better. The reckless travels of Saba started to get exciting, her character as a naïve yet brave women, started to grow a little. She was always reckless, not too prudent but her braveness was enough to get her out of problem. Then you start to meet new characters in the story that make you crack a laugh. When you start noticing, the book is about to get exciting, its engines are starting to heat. Then all of a sudden that’s where it happens. The book gets exciting; every scene is one exciting moment after the other. That’s when you are flying high into the space. Everything that happens is remarkable. You start to love the book; the characters start to grow into you. Thanks good this is not just a book that puts its effort into the cute love story and that’s it. I would’ve tossed by the inexistent fire long ago. Then, you reach its peak and you just love it. You can’t stop reading, and you think somewhere near the end, the calm, the soft music playing in your ears, the voice of a low toned swing singer is playing her tunes when her band is behind her, playing for her voice to be heard, for their music to be heard, and everything is just one nice space travel that lands you soft and leaves you there, calmed, in a peace state. The book is one amazing thing to read. I end up liking it a lot. I can’t say is the kind of book with the one some people cry. But is the kind of book you can’t stop reading past

An action-packed ride
You know that feeling you get after you've finished watching/reading a movie/book and you remember basically nothing of the plot from the beginning to middle of the movie/book because the ending and the parts leading up to the ending just completely distracted you? My English teacher calls this "entertaining and not engaging audiences"; something with very little plot, but non-stop, rollicking, hurtling down a hillside, dizzying, action. Yeah, well, Rebel Heart is kind of like this. There were some aspects that were much better than BRR (like the plot - I found it much harder to get into than BRR), then there were those aspects that weren't (like how there was no Jack). Now that I think about it, Young's Dust Lands series is a little on the weak side with its world-building. I'd go further into this, but that would be kind of an extremely long explanation. And I'm trying to keep things short/sweet/non-ranty. I just hope all the holes in the world-building will be patched up in future.BUT.Action-packed.Action-packed.I feel as if I need to say this twice just to get my point across. Reading some parts became quite hard-going for me. Ack, the tension, the heart-stopping moments, the tension, it was so tense, guys, just omigggggd. It was intense. AND I LOVED IT :DI also found the secondary characters to be much easier to care about this time round. I can actually count on more than the one hand the ones that I genuinely liked! My biggest problem with this book, however, is pretty straightforward: No Jack. OK, that's a little unfair. What I mean to say is: Not Enough Jack. Even Not Enough Jack and Saba.I cry, people, I cry.And also, I long all sorts of hard for Book 3. Urgh. Especially, especially with that ending. What. Was. That. And also, I've realised that this has become somewhat of a rant.Oops.OK... I'm just gonna go now. But read this book!!! It's got great characters, exciting plot, and Jack (but not nearly enough of him). What more could you possibly want?Just a caveat: Keep in mind that I went into REBEL HEART having read a lot of negative reviews, so I was somewhat prepared for what was to come. Therefore, I felt as if I had somehow grown used to what others hated about this book and wasn't bothered by it as much.

Can't Get Enough!
Haven't read 'Blood Red Road' yet? What're you waiting for? It's awesome! Watch out, this review may contain 'Blood Red Rad' spoiler.A Spoiler Free Bit About The BookAfter defeating Vicar Pinch, Saba, Lugh, Emmi and Tommo are heading to the Big Water. And that's where they'll meet Jack. But it's not that simple. Traumatised after Epona's death, Saba's not her normal self. And to top it all off, the Angel of Death has a price on her head.My Review'Blood Red Road' was one of my favourite books of 2013, only really being beaten by 'Divergent'. So I was really excited about reading the second in the 'Dustlands Trilogy' and I wasn't disappointed. I know many people were but I wasn't one of them.Although the first part of the book written in third person following Jack did throw me off a bit and took me a while to get into. But I'm the kind of reader who can't get enough of Jack so I was quite happy learning more about him and seeing what he was up to. It was a strange kind of way of throwing me back into the series but I think it was clever. It just made me hungrier for the rest of the novel.Once back in Saba's first person point of view I was home. I fell back into I as thought I'd finished 'Blood Red Road' and picked up 'Rebel Heart' straight away. Saba was a little different this time around but I found that to be realistic. The things she went through in 'Blood Red Road' would change a person. My only criticism is that it took a while to get going. It didn't take forever like far too many books I've read, but compared to the pace of 'Blood Red Road' it was a little slower. But never fear, once it got going it got going! There were a few new characters I liked as well as a few of the ones cropping up again. Young did a good job of reminding me who all the characters were without me consciously being aware that I was being reminded. And fans of DeMalo (like me) won't be disappointed! You just wait.I must dedicate a paragraph to Molly. I loved her. She did my name proud just as Molly Weasley in 'Harry Potter' and Molly Hooper in 'Sherlock' have. The addition of Molly in 'Rebel Heart' made it all the more enjoyable. She was a no-nonsense, excellent character and I enjoyed every part she was in. Other than my obvious main character favourites, Molly was the best.'Rebel Heart' surprised me in places and a little shock is always good. I'm not surprised nearly enough by YAs anymore so it was awesome. If you've read 'Rebel Heart' you'll probably know which bit I'm referring to and my question to you is did you expect that?EvaluationPlot - 9/10 - heading to the Big Water, another long journey storyWay Plot Was Pursued - 10/10 - liked all the steps on the journeyCharacters - 10/10 - go Molly!Style - 10/10 - love the narration and that it's written in Saba's dialectPace - 9/10 - Slower than 'Blood Red Road'Would I recommend it? - Yes, I'm loving this trilogyWould I look up the author? - Yes. I definitely would.Everything I loved about 'Blood Red Road' I loved about'Rebel Heart'. Bring on 'Raging Star'!

Lookin Fer Jack
Second volume in the Dustlands series. A post apocalyptic tale for teenage readers. Ideal age being thirteen and up, thanks to some violence and harsh scenes.Mind you, whilst it does have some exposition as to what happened in the first book Blood Red Road (Dustlands) new readers might struggle to get into this, so you are much better off starting with said first book. This one run for three hundred and ninety three pages. It's divided into ten chapters of varying length. Some are quite short others are a bit longer and one runs to almost sixty pages. These chapters are divided into sub sections via line breaks and a crow symbol, so easy reading breaks can be taken. This also adopts the writing style seen in the first volume. First person present tense with a narrator who speaks in an accent, so some words may be a little tricky. But if you got used to that in Blood red road, you won't have any problem with it here.As those who read Blood Red Road will know, our heroine Saba fell hard for a boy called Jack. But he had to go away. He narrates the first chapter of this book, where we see through his eyes that the threat of the militia called the Tonton hasn't entirely gone away.Saba then takes over narration for the rest of the book. As we catch up with her and her brother and friends as they are trying to move on with their lives. But it's not coming easy for Saba. She has strange dreams. She misses Jack so very much. And eventually, she sets out to find him.But with the Tonton still around, the course of true love will run anything but smooth.Saba remains an engaging character is a very vivid and compelling setting. But this does take a long time to get going, as it slowly fills in character and setting details and pushes Saba to make decisions that she needs to. Do hang on in there though because the book gradually does build up some very nice momentum. She has terrifying encounters with denizens of this strange new world along the way. But it really clicks just beyond the halfway mark when it gets into territory that could have come out of a western. However there is some clever writing going on here, and a few excellent surprises do await the reader in the final quarter, thanks to some very well worked out plotting. Her desperate pining for Jack does really make you desperate to know how it will work out for them. Also very well portrayed is the issues she and her brother now have with each other since being reunited. The book has a superb cinematic quality to it, and there are some scenes that would go great on the big screen. It will keep you turning pages to see what happens to the characters right to the very end.Which is almost self contained. But there is still room in the story at the same time for more to come.I will be back for that if there is. This does take a while to get into, but it's worth the read. A very enjoyable sequel. Blood Red Road (Dustlands)

Good addition to the series
I didn't like this as much as the first. I wanted more Jack! That being said, it was another riveting adventure across the hard world they live in and I enjoyed it.Meeting back up with old friends and making new ones was cool. The Free Hawks are a great bunch and seeing Maev and Ash again was nice. I cant quite remember Creed but he made it all a bit more light-hearted with his flirting.Lugh has been annoying me since he came back at the end of the last one and he didn't endear himself to me at all in this one, though at the end of the book I understand his feelings but that doesn't excuse him for the rest of the story.DeMalo was also a little strange. And Saba's decision about two thirds through the book annoyed me too. Why would you do that?!?!Jack got mixed up in trouble as usual but I still love his and Saba's relationship and I so hope they get some sort of HEA in the third book.P.S. What's happening with that heart-stone??

Saba Soars
The saga of Saba and her motley crew continues to entrance and delight. This story is like poetry, rising and falling, on a dust red wind. It is start, naked, and heartfelt. And what happened. Saba is distracted by a message from Jack and she must turn, believing he's in dire need of her help. On the contrary, and people die, and Saba's head is turned, all on a sign, all because the stars know our true path. Yep. Loved Rebel Heart. Loved it a lot.

Not as good as the first.
I loved this book however I was a little disappointed by it. It had some pretty big shoes to fill and in some ways it fulfilled. Shocking and exciting. In this book however I think Saba changed too much like she was some love sick dying sheep. Lugh I wasn't too fond of either, not sure why but I just wasn't fond of him. I felt myself missing the relationship between Jack and Saba. The cover of this book is very deceiving, you think you are going to get more Jack but in reality you don't. I did love this book and I recommend it but if you have read the first, don't set your spirits too high. Maybe the third will be better.
