When a ransom bid results in the death of a child, the police have only one lead the old lady who witnessed the kidnapper using a public phone box. Though her recollection is vague, she volunteers to act as bait for the killer telling the press that she had seen the kidnapper's face, she waits for him to attack...A compelling British noir boasting a gritty, powerful performance from Dan Duryea, Do You Know This Voice? is based on a story by noted crime/gothic horror writer Evelyn Berckman. It is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.

I CERTAINLY KNOW MR DURYEA'S VOICE - from NETWORK DVD
Two points. I may be just a bit generous with 4 stars. I also watched the film in 2 parts. Our ancient cat had a bit of a fit at the 35 min mark (she wasn't watching the film) and we had to take her to the vet. Luckily tho she is 22 years old she was passed fit and is home again - I digress, but it explains why this review might be a bit odd. This 1964 film is very low budget, but is carried and works because of Duryea, who, even tho he is a bit intense in places, does save the film. To say more would perhaps be too much info. He is ably supported by Gwen Watford, a lovely lady who, I feel is too often forgotten. The surprise for me was to see character actor Peter Madden (he of the pinched face and amazing voice) as a Police Superintendent, and making a fine fist of the role. The plot is about kidnapping and the tracking down of said bad people. Slightly too long at 77 mins it still moves along albeit on 2 or 3 sets and because you always watch Dan the Man. The transfer is an excellent 16.9 ratio (fills my whole screen) with clear B/W picture and good sound. No extras. It's a bit out of the ordinary and is deserving of a watch, it's just not a 5 star film. Recomended to fans of the genre.

A British film gem
At first you are left guessing as to the identity of "The Voice" and then it is revealed but that doesn't spoil things as the film then takes a scary feel to it as you watch a killer at work. Well worth watching.

Shades of Hitchcock
For what I assume was a B movie, this is surprisingly gripping with occasional shades of Hitchcock. Well acted but with a slightly incredible plot, it's 1960s film making at its most entertaining.

A treat for fans of Duryea
Dan Duryea is well up to standard in this one. If you are a fan it's worth watching. If you are not a Duryea fan you should know that he's on the screen for much of the film.

Ridiculous film.
Most ludicrous plot ever, even for a B picture. If the protagonists were real criminals they would have been caught in five seconds flat.

Nasty Dan
Shoe string production with the wonderful Dan Duryea towering above all concerned. Tracky, sordid, nasty and completely watchable.
