... source pan for a few minutes to get them nice and fluffy
After I pre-cook and drain my potatoes I place them over for a source pan for a few minutes to get them nice and fluffy. Similar to a garlic press, you simply place your potatoes inside and press down making nice even rice like potatoes. The benefit to using a potato ricer instead of mashing the potatoes by hand is that the potato ricer achieves a uniformly smooth consistency with no lumps. And an electric mixer or food processor can overwork the starches, producing a gluey product. A ricer is definitely the way to go.

Updated review
I have actually purchased (2) of these. The first one was for me and I would rate it 4 to 5 stars. When my son was visiting, he made the mashed potatoes and commented on how much he liked the ricer. So, I purchased a second one for him as a "just because" gift. He contacted me last night to let me know that the ricer I bought for him bent/broke on the very first potato that he tried to mash; hence, the 1 star review as we are only running 50/50 in terms of quality.**UPDATE**: Vinestar has been fantastic to deal with. I heard from her immediately after the first review and I received a replacement unit already. The guarantee is straight forward with no hoops to jump through - just prompt, courteous service. An excellent vendor indeed who truly stands behind the guarantee! The new unit is here and I have inspected it closely. I am sure that we will not have any problems with this one what-so-ever and that my son will be quite happy with it. My personal unit is still getting a workout at least twice a week and it is holding up spectacularly. These ricers really are great! As other reviewers have mentioned, these are great time savers as you do not have to peel your potatoes. The peel is left behind in the basket area which is very easy to clean - either by hand or top of the rack in the dishwasher. With the 3 different disks provided, you can mash multiple items and get different consistencies. The handles are long enough so you gain quite a bit of leverage when forcing the food through - especially nice if you have arthritis in your hands as I do. Our potatoes always come out perfect - fluffy, airy, and voluminous. I just regret not having discovered this particular ricer years ago.

Poor quality (where it matters)
Everything was great about this except the main pressure point where you'd think they'd put the strongest metal - but in fact was extremely flimsy metal. I'm talking about the arm of the plunger - that bends after a few potatoes if you're not EXTREMELY careful and put in the softest potatoes possible. Any force bends that arm. Unfortunately I wasn't able to return this in time so I'm left with scrap metal. BUYER BEWARE!

Changed The Way I Make Mashed Potatoes
I have been making potato or green fig (cooking bananas) pie with a wired masher for years. It was always a very time consuming and tiring process, not to mention the end result was lumpy mashed potatoes, which I hate. My sister mentioned that I should try using a potato ricer, so I decided to give it a try.I chose this ricer primarily because it is made completely of stainless steel and I am extremely cautious about using anything with plastic. It also comes with three removable metal plates which is an added bonus, as it allows me to vary the texture of my pies to my liking. Unlike the wired masher, using the Acutos ricer was a breeze. Boiled potatoes were cut in half; placed face down in the ricer and with one press, my job was almost done. Best of all I didn’t need to peel the potatoes! After I mixed in all my ingredients I can say, without a doubt, using the ricer made a lighter, fluffier mashed potato pie. The end product is definitely superior. If you want light, creamy mashed potatoes, you should definitely get this potato ricer. I recommend it.

My New Favorite Mashed Potato Tool
As an average chef and mom, I must say that this kitchen tool is on my list of essentials. I normally make mashed potatoes using a wire-masher, however the mashed potatoes would come out gummy and lumpy. My two year old son does not seem to like the lumpy texture and would spit it out.I saw a potato ricer being used on the Food Network and the results were light and fluffy mashed potatoes with no lumps. I decided I had to get one and try it myself.I spent some time on Amazon researching and found the Acutos Potato Ricer, which was made of stainless steel and came with three differently sized discs. It looked perfect for making mash potatoes for my son and as a bonus also came with a free cookbook with recipes.Since using the Acutos Ricer, my mashed potato making has gone to a whole new level. It has reached near perfection with just the right amount of creaminess and no lumps consistently. My son now eats his mashed potatoes without any fuss.I cannot wait to try this product out on vegetables to give him. Thank you Acutos!

Probably would work fine for its intended purpose but I gave it a rather solid squeeze and the metal connecting the upper handle to the plunger bent when the potato wasnt fully cooked. Even though its stainless its very thin and bends a lot more than expectedI returned it and replaced it with a more solid cast aluminum one which is far more sturdy.

Restaurant quality smooth!
This ricer makes making mashed potatoes sooo much faster and easier than the regular potato masher. The best part is that it makes for some really smooth mashed potatoes- restaurant quality smooth. The ricer itself looks and feels very durable, so much so that I was even able to put an entire regular sized sweet potato in and it did the job. However, I'd recommend cutting it in half as it's much easier to use that way.I like that it has three different removable plates. The different sizes can make for a nice variety in presentation at lunches or dinner parties.Cleaning was not a problem. Just ran some soap and water right after use and I was good to go. The fact that the the plates are removable also makes cleaning that much easier.I can't find any faults with it and I would recommend to all my friends and family.
