Second Synology unit and works very well
This is my second Synology DS unit (the first one being a DS412+, which now serves as a backup server to my new 1019+). Extremely simple to set up, and even though in my case the transition required restoring from backups (I wanted to use the newer Btrfs file format rather than ext4) the process itself was easy. In use so far, it has exceeded my expectations. I use it as a media and file server, and the way it is capable of transcoding even two or three video streams simultaneously is impressive.

Best nas server out there, period!
Bought a terramaster before this. Had to reset it around 3 times. Then returned that and bought this, haven't reset or restarted once. Set up and Apps are brilliant. Synology also have their own raid configuration which no one else does, called SHR, this gives you more storage space than any other raids so you get much more out of your storage with all the benefits of the apps, user interface and amazing support from Synology. It really doesn't get any better.

A fantastic home NAS, lacking a big feature
Synology does make some of the best NAS software money can buy. The hardware inside the DS1019+ isn't too bad, however for the price this unit really should've had a spare PCIe slot users can install a 10Gb NIC into. For the amount of drives the NAS has (and the fact you can install two additional NVME cache drives), it's quite unacceptable how the only option you're given is to aggregate two 1Gb ports for a grand total of 2Gb of maximum network throughput. The CPU itself is okay for the market the NAS is intended for, and the hardware transcoding capabilities have solidified my decision to get the DS1019+ over the DS1618+ which IMO the latter is a better option as long as you're not looking to use the system as a media server. The DS1618+ machine does allow for 10Gb NIC expansion and also up to 32GB of officially supported memory. You can unofficially upgrade the DS1019+ to 16GB, however there is little reason to with the network bandwidth being a large bottleneck. Really what Synology should have done is given the DS1618+ transcoding capabilities and my complains would have been entirely reduced down to pricing alone. Of course, I knew all this before having purchased the NAS but it still doesn't make me any less salty about how I feel about Synology's prosumer NAS lineup. I moved over from a custom built home solution to a Synology box because the software is both extremely powerful and equally as easy to use. You can genuinely hand over a DSM to most PC users and they can figure out mostly everything without having to ever read documentation. Ultimately I don't want to be micromanaging a system such as FreeNAS or similar, DSM just works the way you want it to out of the box with things such as free signed SSL certificates, and all the packages you'd ever want to run built right in. The bottom line is: the DS1019+ is a fantastic media server if you opt for hardware assisting transcoding. You can also run several packages and docker containers without problems whilst still having the CPU grunt to transcode a few video streams. For a pure file server however the system falls short due to being limited to its network options (or lack thereof). It's a massive shame as the system is otherwise extremely capable with the disk expansion capabilities, NVME caching and "unofficial" memory expansion options.

Easy to set up
Bought to move all back up all files locally rather than onto a cloud provider. Was either this or the 918 but instead went for the extra drive bay and 8Gb ram that the 1019 has. Great for plex also.

Poor software, cheaply made
This kit always gets really great reviews. I've had mine for a couple weeks now & I think those reviewers were overpaid. Cheap kit, the enclosure rattles, fans are very loud even on quiet mode. In fact 2 fans inb my Sunology are significantly louder than the 9 Noctua fans in my pc. Move the box & it rattles & vibrates. The included Active backup software works about 60% of the time. The remaining time it hangs at 100% complete. Check their forums, the latest Synology backup has borked several systems. Meanwhile, my 15 year old Netgear NAS is still running perfectly.
