Q: Do the pages have the space next to the pictures for memos?

no. it has pages that you can insert photos into them but no space to put memos. you would have to put memos next to or around the photos before you insert them into the album.

Q: can the extra pages be removed?

I don't see any way of removing pages. However, I've purchased two of these albums and am very pleased with them. I use the extra pages for Save-the-Dates, Invitations, Thank You cards, etc. There is also an insert for a DVD in the back. I recommend this album.
