The Crazy Stranger [DVD]

Love this movie! Full of whimsy, longing, and shots of ruggedly handsome but restless people and villages. The heroins find resolution, but not in the way they expect, and by way of of poetic and (very) cathartic heartache, and, yes, love. Add in perfectly-timed puffs at hand-rolled cigarettes and naked winter romps through the forest and you've got a winning combination (this is NOT an endorsement of tobacco, but it does film well)! A great snapshot Transylvania, for those curious about that region. One of the DVDs in my tiny collection. I bought it for all of my friends.

If you like a wide assortment of films...especially if you love to see movies about the real gypsy life..you will really enjoy this movie. The acting was great, by everyone..there is nothing that I would change about this movie...except that I would have liked to see more Belly Dancing! But that is only because that girl was such a good dancer, and I happen to be a dancer..ergo I like dancing. The story line was simple, but fast...it kept my interest all the way through. Some will like it...some won't... but as for me I give it 5 stars... I liked it so much that I actually bought it!

What makes a good movie a great experience?: great acting, fantastic music, unforgettable scenes, sweet humour and the aroused urge to be right there with those people in the movie. This flick has it all! I have seen it 5 times now. After each viewing I left the screen smiling in my heart and feeling very happy. I don't know how many more times I will watch it, but I sure talk about it whenever the best movie subject is brought up in the conversation. May all of you enjoy it!

Having enjoyed the music and patient non-narrative pacing of Latcho Drom, my friends and I tracked down this other Gypsy-themed film by the same director, Tony Gatlif. Unfortunately this one has far less of the sublime music and tries to tell a story. A young Parisian fellow travels to Romania to find a favorite Gypsy singer of his late father's. He enters a Romany (Gypsy) village and is unable to leave, though I can't imagine why. All the residents do is complain and curse in incredibly foul expletives. Any child old enough to read should not be allowed to watch this endless barrage of foul profanity. If a child is too young to read the subtitles then it would be ok since the dialogue is in Romanes, French, and Romanian. The only redeeming feature of this film, other than the occasional musical moments, is the opportunity to view the life of an oft-ignored culture, but this film is a wholly unpleasant experience.

I find the Roma(Gypsy)people and their lifestyle very interesting. Their colorful style of clothes, their music and occupations, and their old-fashioned close-knit family way of life are great. A lot of American modern families split up and go separate ways. But I cannot watch this with my family because of the nudity in a couple places and off-color language in some places. The scenery and the beautiful ladies are great though. I'll probably watch it again without the subtitles. I'd also recommend the film Latcho Drom, also directed by Tony Gatlif. A film filled with the Roma people and their music, from India to Spain. (No nudity or off-color language)

I've been looking for this movie for a long time, but didn't realize it was available, since it wasn't listed by the original title, Gadjo Dilo. I only found it after seeing it in a video store with both titles, and finally knew to search for it by the English title.This is my wife's all-time favorite movie. My teenage daughter also fell in love with it. Their comments echo those of the reviewer above. I haven't seen it myself, but am buying it on their very strong recommendation, since it's very hard to find.

I liked this movie when I first saw it. It doesn't look so good now and the story line is pretty thin, but the gypsy music, what there is of it, is good. There is not as much music as I remembered though.

Watch it uninterrupted, and you will be taken away to a gypsy village in Romania. It is almost like a documentary. It is one of the few movies I've watched again and again.

L'histoire se déroule en Roumanie, où un jeune homme (Romain Duris) part sur les traces d'une des chanteuse préférée de son père.Et nous suivons son fabuleux périple au fil des rencontres avec les Roms (les tziganes).Ce film est tellement bien tourné que nous voyageons avec lui. Des scènes filmées comme un documentaire, nous permettent de nous y prendre encore plus.Et si, vous êtes amoureux de la culture tzigane, ce voyage vous émerveillera vraiment.

Diesen lebendigen Film habe ich mir vor Jahren einige Male im Kino angeschaut und war nun sehr froh, ihn mir auch auf DVD ansehen zu können. Ich kann ihn nur empfehlen, vermittelt doch auch dieser Film von Tony Gatlif das Lebensgefühl einer Kultur , die wir nicht kennen , deren Musik , deren Leben , deren Geschichte uns aber durchaus bewegt. Die Musik der Sinti und Roma und die Begegnung der Kulturen,bzw. der Menschen steht auch in diesem Film wieder im Vordergrund und wir können uns beeindrucken lassen von einer Geschichte, die von Begegnung, von der Überwindung der Fremde , von Liebe , Sehnsucht , Schmerz und Tod erzählt und wenn unsere Herzen dann immer noch verschlossen sein sollten , so wird es die Musik sicher schaffen , uns zu erreichen , uns zu öffnen und uns nach dem Film mit einem etwas bangen, sehnsuchtsvollem Gefühl in der Brust zurück lassen. Sehnsucht nach dieser großen Authenzität der Menschen, nach der Echtheit der Gefühle.Das sind jetzt recht impressionistische Äußerungen, mit denen vielleicht nicht jeder etwas anfangen kann, darum noch etwas zum Inhalt : Ein junger Franzose ist nach Romänien gereist, um bei Zigeunern die Sängerin zu finden, die sein Vater bis zu seinem Tode so gerne gehört hat und die ihm auch ein Schlüssel zum Verständnis seines Vaters zu sein scheint. Auf dieser Suche gelangt er in ein Roma-Dorf, und hat eine beeindruckende Fähigkeit , sich auf die Menschen und ihre Ängste und Eigenheiten einzulassen. Dabei lernt er auch eine junge Frau kennen , die überzeugend von Rona Hartner gespielt wird , welche neben dem anderen Hauptdarsteller Romain Duris die einzige professionelle Schauspielerin ist, alle anderen Personen spielen im Prinzip sich selber . Im weiteren Verlauf erlebt er eine ganze Menge mit diesen so sympathischen Menschen und begleitet sie durch Freud und Schmerz. Beenidruckend sind dabei nicht zuletzt die vielen bunten Farben der Kleider, die lachenden Gesichter.Hervorzuheben bei der DVD ist der umfangreiche Zusatzteil mit Musik und vor allem den spannenden, ausgedehnten Interviews mit einigen Schauspielern und dem Regisseur. Denn darauf brennt man nach dem Anschauen - man möchte mehr über die Hintergründe und die Entstehung dieses ergreifenden Kunstwerkes erfahren. Zwar ist die DVD nicht ganz billig, aber dies ist ja ein Film, den man sich immer mal wieder anschauen kann, besonders wenn mann den Ton über die Anlage hört, also Ohren und Augen gleichermaßen auf ihre Kosten kommen.

Je suis trés content de mon achat...je recomand a tous amazon.Un beau plongeon au sein de l'univers tsigane et de sa musique et ses coutumes. Comme souvent, Duris est très très bon, la musique signée Tony Gatlif également (meilleur musique de film césar 1999). Je recommande vivement ce film!

Mein ehemaliger Freund, der vor 20 Jahren mit dem Kajak im Donaudelta war, meinte, der Film sei authentisch!Und dann war da noch eine Cristina aus Bukarest. Die hatte auch Drive ... - Ob wir uns mal wiedersehen?
