If you have ever been to PE class, skip this book!
I don't usually leave reviews, but this book really upset me. While this book may have been good in the 90's, it is almost useless today. If you had a proper PE class as a kid, you probably know every stretch and exercise in this book. They are literally the most basic flexibility and strength exercises. You would find better information on the internet. The first part of the book is also extremely repetitive. They basically just give the same advice for every body part. While the book tries to explain what muscles, ligaments, tendons, etc are in each area, they give no information as to how to identify what exact pains you might be dealing with. The flexibility and strength exercises given do not come with specifics as to what they help, instead they just say "shoulder stretch", "back stretch", "hamstring stretch", etc. The book also does not mention the use of personal muscle massage techniques, like using a massage ball or foam roller to target certain muscles during recovery. It basically just tells you to get a massage!I don't know who keeps giving this book good reviews, but this book needs to die. Like I said, it may have been good in the 90's, but many things have advanced since then. If I spent money on a real physical therapist and they made me do these exercises, I would get up and leave. I was hoping for a more in depth look at how to maintain my body and to promote recovery after my workouts, but this isn't the book to do it.I am definitely going to try to return this.

Great Database of Physical Therapy Exercises for the Whole Body
I personally love this book, it is everything I hoped it would be. I also purchased "Age Defying Fitness" at the same time, and this is by far the better book for me. I have a complicated medical condition, I have been in physical therapy A LOT. I have tons of old, printed sheets full of exercises, and just wanted them all in one place, within a book, where they won't get as worn out or lost, and I wanted to gain access to more exercises I could add into my daily routine. This is the perfect book for that. All of the exercises I have been given were in here, and tons more. They offer program ideas for what to do before you sit down for work in the morning, and things like that. The first part of the book is very repetitive and such, but it's worth it to me just for the exercise "database." Really happy with this, I use it almost every day.

Wonderful book for safe and effective exercises
I am a retired healthcare professional and needed exercises to strengthen and stretch my back and neck muscles to alleviate cervical tingling and pain caused by poor posture. I also wanted safe and effective exercises based on sound science and research to improve my posture, flexibility and endurance as I am aging. Marilyn Moffat, PT, Ph.D, FAPTA is a physical therapist and the book's editorial review board consisted of physical therapists from across the country. It is an official publication of the American Physical Therapy Association. The book has excellent illustrations by Terry Boles of the correct way to do each exercise, tells you how the exercise will help you and covers exercises for the entire body. Topics covered in this 288 page book are: Part I: Chapter One: the back Chapter Two: the neck Chapter Three: the jaw Chapter Four: the shoulder Chapter Five: the elbow Chapter Six: the wrist and hand Chapter Seven: the hip Chapter Eight: the knee Chapter Nine: the ankle and foot Part II: Chapter Ten: posture Chapter Eleven: gait Chapter Twelve: body mechanics Chapter Thirteen: body weight Chapter Fourteen: footwear Chapter Fifteen: strength, endurance, and Flexibility Chapter Sixteen: sports Chapter Seventeen: work Part III: Chapter Eighteen: strength and endurance exercises Chapter Nineteen: flexibility exercisesIt is well written and the instructions are explicit and easy to understand. This book along with Age-Defying Fitness written by Moffat and Lewis, also physical therapists with doctorates, are excellent and both are bargains available on amazon.com. I am very pleased with each of these books and highly recommend them for persons who need exercises to increase flexibility, range-of-motion, balance, endurance and to correct common problems involved in maintaining independence and freedom from discomfort and pain as our bodies age.

This book was published in 1999, but the human body hasn't changed, so it's just what it says it is, maintenance and repair instructions, with very good illustrations. Read the chapters before the pictures and this book will help you take care of your own musculoskeletal system without a doctor's appointment. Very good reference.

Excellent book
Great book for non-medical personnel. Illustrations and exercise explanations are on point. At the beginning the author gives you a short chapter introduction so you can remember a couple of things before going into the exercises chapter. Easy to read and follow. Great for self improvement.
