The lantern lights up the tent with no problem. It's a little small for the outside. It doesn't cover as big an area as some other lantern products but is adequate for the picnic table. The trick is to place it on top of something so it's a few inches above the table. So if you are looking for something to light up a large area, don't buy this one; if you are looking for something portable and versatile and you only need to cover a small area, this is the one.Although we haven't gotten a chance to use the emergency light (hope never have to!), I think it can be very useful in the wild or on the road when you have car problems. The safety hammer is an added bonus. My husband now keeps the flashlight in his car at all times.UPDATE (2013/12/15)===================The battery in my husband's card didn't make it in last week's brutal weather. He had to call AAA. He parked in a huge parking lot under the interstate bridges, which made it really hard to spot his car. He turn on the flashing emergency light and placed the flashlight on the roof. That helped AAA find him easily.

The light it gives off is much better than I expected and it's very bright, which makes me wonder how long the light will last.Other than the utility clip and safety hammer, the tools might not hold up for long under repeated use. They're there if nothing better is available.Still it's not a bad little device to have stored in a glove box and I caught a great price on it. I just hope I only ever have to use it as a flashlight and not a knife or screw driver.

I have reordered these several times and I love them! I use them in all of our cars and in my children's cars…I have given them for gifts also. They have fabulous features and work great! This is a necessity for every vehicle!
