if you go reverse does it subtract for you?

Yes it will roll off numbers. Great for measuring long areas. I have bought two of these for our use.

Has anyone used this on a graded dirt road? thanks in advance for your answers.

The unit will work on varied and rough terrain and for infrequent use, is a decent unit. My issues with this unit is that the axle housing and counter are not very sturdy and in my case, the unit was wore out in 6 or 7 months. I use my wheels daily to measure existing homes and businesses on all types of surfaces, sometimes as many as 40 homes a day. Once the axle gets "sloppy" from use it no longer counts accurately and is hard to reset the counter. For lighter duty service than what I do it will suffice. Also keep in mind that I have used many measuring wheels; different models and manufacturers, and have yet to find one that survives to the end of the warranty with the volume of work I do with them. I average wearing out two wheels per year. Hope this helps!
