Metal Evolution presents 11 episodes based on the much-debated Metal History "family tree" originally shown in Headbanger's Journey. This 24 sub-genre genealogical chart reveals the vast complex progeny of heavy metal--from Early Metal and Shock Rock to Thrash, from Progressive Metal to Grunge and Nu Metal. Using the chart as his road map, our host, metalhead turned anthropologist Sam Dunn, will crisscross the globe in search of the very essence of Metal, from bars and back alleys to the biggest open air festivals.

I had them saved for years -- literally -- as the reviews of the DVD's I'd read were not great, saying the quality was poor
I've watched this entire series countless times on VH1 Classic, after saving the individual episodes over a few separate DVR's. I had them saved for years -- literally -- as the reviews of the DVD's I'd read were not great, saying the quality was poor, etc. After watching a few episodes with a friend and getting him excited about the series, I logged into Amazon and noticed there were now multiple listings, and this particular version has a line added to the Editorial Reviews section (below the episode listing) that says : "**Please note** This is the collectible set in steelbook packaging and not the inferior 'on demand' edition." I can personally and totally verify this is the case. The packaging is great, but most important the quality of the DVD's is top-notch and just as you would want and expect. The eleven episodes are spread over three DVD's, and after watching them all I can say they all played great, the video quality looked sharp, there were no censoring "bleeps," and I'm thrilled that I finally own this. TIme to free-up some DVR space.... finally!

the metal family tree....
I loved this series as soon as I saw it, I already had a wide knowledge of metal and music in general but this pieces it all together to show the history and family tree of my favorite music. This also turned me on to some more obscure bands and let me dig deeper into each genre covered. My only beef is why isn't the 12 episode Extreme Metal included in the complete season? Also sure wish that cool steelbook amp DVD case at the Canadian Amazon was a bluray, but still almost bought it since it is so freaking cool.If you love metal, this is for you and if you love musical knowledge this will open your eyes to why this form of music has been going strong for 50 years even without much mainstream radio or promotion.

Metal Evolution: The Series
Just by this documentary series alone, I have become a fan of not just Banger Films, but also Sam Dunn. Sam Dunn is professional enough, but his endearing quality is the fact he seems to be one of us-a fan.The show takes you down the road from before heavy metal, a time when people were discovering types of music and what very well may have started curiosity, to after glam, grunge, progressive, Nu metal, etc. The series makes the audience think about all angles as well as give you the musicians perspective. You may not appreciate all the genres of this series, but you'll certainly look at things differently and maybe appreciate heavy metal a little more. If you love hard rock, heavy metal, I would definitely check the series out.

The Most Insighful Documentary Series on Metal Ever!
This show was great watching it on VH1 Classic and now it's even better on DVD, with no commercials or interruptions! Excellent production, quality, insight, etc. I certainly hope that they commit to a second season of Metal Evolution, as this is not comprehensive enough, and I feel unfulfilled without a concise examination of the genres which have yet to have been recorded for this documentary series. As for the other comments, I don't know what's wrong with the DVD. I'm half way through the series and I have yet for the DVD to stop/skip/glitch. One should be careful about what you say about the product. If you have qualms, direct them toward the supplier/producer, rather than the film itself.

The Early History Of Metal
I've wanted this series since it was broadcast. Not much to bitch about, except I wish it were longer and that there's not much in the way of extras. Otherwise, imho, a must have for metal fans.

For all kinds of head bangers
Plenty of interesting information about the evolution of metal music. But there are a lot of. very. substantial players that have been left out

Must have!
This is such an awesome series! Sam and his crew did an incredible job. I watch it all the time and I swear I learn something new every time I watch it. It is a must have if you’re into hard rock and heavy metal or even if you’re just a student of music and it’s history.

Great series!
Excellent tv series on the history of Heavy Metal. I grew up with 80's metal. No not Motley Crüe but the greats like Judas Priest, Dio era Black Sabbath (love Ozzy to), Scorpions and Iron Maiden to name a few. Then I started drifting into Prog. or Classic rock. A few years ago I started getting back into the heavy stuff and this set introduced me to types of Metal I had never heard of. Great interviews with Metal legends and with fringe artists as well. Where nothing is going to cover everything a style of music has to offer this pointed me in some interesting directions. I would love to see more TV series like this. I know they did one on Jazz about ten years ago but I was not impressed (and yes i am a jazz fan). This will be watched again, and soon!

Metal Music Magic
This set was a Valentine's gift for my husband. We had seen some of the episodes on VH1 and knew we would want to see the whole story, and perhaps more than once! If you love history and music, especially heavy music, this is a must see! The sound and visuals are high quality on these DVDs. I am glad I read the reviews that stated that this is the set to get, not the US version which is DVD-R. Plays fine on our Sony player here in the States. Shipped fast with great tracking info. and arrived carefully packaged. A note on the DVD case--it is actually metal! Rock on, headbangers!
