A Master Novelist.
Wilbur Smith is one of my favorite authors and I have thoroughly enjoyed every one of his books. I was born in Africa and revel in the nostalgia that his books provide me.I would encourage everyone to sample his offerings

wilbur smith is one of the best overall writers I've ever read
I bought my first Wilbur Smith novel "A sparrow falls" at a garage sale in Dallas Texas for 25 cents. And was hooked on his Ballantyne/Courtney saga's located basically in South Africa. This was in 1978 and i have avidly followed his tomes ever since. I've been reading him for over 40 years, watched him go through 3 wives (I've gone thru only 2) and heartily recommend any of the Courtney and/or Ballantyne sagas. Some of his standalone novels aren't quite up to his usually "stay up all night finishing the book" but the standalone books beat a lot of Times bestseller's who subsist only of an authors name written with "new name" I don't believe James Patterson has written a book by himself in probably 20 years and he was one hell of an author back in the day but now he just puts his name on books written with "john doe" and amazingly enough, sells a bunch of books. Mr Smith has also started doing some of the same but uses care in the additional author but to a much better storyline vice Mr Patterson's pick of the week. In Mr. Smith's defense, He is in his 80's so should slow down bit and enjoy life more. But, I certainly hope that he continues writing well into his 100's!

A definite must for Smith fans
I've read all the Wilbur Smith books I can get my hands on and was happy to see this one on kindle. I noticed a lot of the reviews were somewhat derogatory due to graphic scenes of a sexual nature. Personally, I didn't find it too distracting as it was part of the flow of the story and gave a realistic explanation for the events that unfolded.. I did find the writing tedious in some conversational segments, but that is nothing new for this author. He has such a talent for vivid imagery, that I find myself gasping on occasion and this has been the case for all of his books. The story is gripping and maybe it's the strong female character in this book that makes it so enjoyable for me but it's easy to tell it was written from the male perspective which must be taken into account as well. All that aside, I found it to be a page turner that I was sad to finish although it was a satisfying book with hints of a sequel if he should so desire. I found that I cared about the central characters and was able to empathize with them throughout. The author definitely paints a picture that stays with you. I found the story itself to be disturbing in nature and thought provoking. While it provides a nice escape, there are also a lot of undertones that make for uncomfortable speculation as to the state of the world. I've always found that to be the case in a Wilbur Smith novel. Not just eye candy, but a means of opening the mind to injustice and the correct course of action. You'll either agree or disagree as to the appropriateness of the decisions that are made, but you won't be unmoved. I recommend this book and this author in particular.

The only thing original about this book is how BAD it is.
I read the reviews, but as a long time fan of Mr. Smith I bought it anyway. How bad could it possibly be? Hmmm. Everyone else is right. Awful. Obviously not Mr. Smith's original work but written by someone who is at least familiar with his general plots. Sigh. It was hard to read. Hard to believe. Empty, and souless. Please release nothing more unless YOU'VE written it Mr. Smith--and if you've reached the end of your writing capabilities...then please rest on your laurels with all of the respect you truly deserve. Do not let these "ghost writers" taint your reputation any further!I own, and read, every book Smith's written about once a year. Out of the 2 stars this product gets, 1.5 of those are for his many decades of dedication in giving his previous work. The .5 "Those in Peril" receives is simply because I still read it. I'm a fan. I had too.The only thing original about this book is how BAD it is. Multiple rape? Check. Impossible odds? Check. Love scenes? Check. Improbable wealth? Check. Overly handsome and capable yet humble heroes? Check. Literally, there is a nod to every single one of his previous books in this one book...like by simply cutting them up and putting them together in a different order the person (obviously not Smith) thought they could fool true fans. Worse than that, this person has left out my favorite parts of Smith's work...the adventure, the "coming into your own" of growing up, the way the characters change/grow through-out a book. All of his other books have those same elements that could have been cheesy (ie: uberwealthy, beautiful people, the subtle love story going on behind the adversity and adventure)...yet his beautiful prose and descriptive powers (anyone else remember the paragraph-long sentences describing a single sky or tree?) always managed to make it "not cheesy". The plots and characters used to fairly sing off the pages and create movie-worthy images in your head as you read each tiny detail he attended to......and now? Now it's awful. It's the difference between the Paris Hilton and a pay-by-the-hour motel. The difference between filet mignon and hamburger helper. Tiny, short sentences. No beautiful descriptions or explanations. After having read his work so often I found my brain trying to fill in what he would have said, had he actually written it. Ugh.Whoever wrote this: Quit playing with this man's stellar reputation! Sell us a stupid coffee mug w/ his name on it if you must further the empire! Hell, I'd rather send him a check to help cover bills than buy another book like this. At least that way we'd BOTH benefit...

A nice clean book arrived on time.
The story about a soldier of fortune who captivates a rich, beautiful and powerful woman goes on and on and I eventually got bored and stopped reading for awhile. I finally flipped to the final pages to discover a fairly predictable ending. Having read a couple of Wilbur Smith books long ago, I once again appreciate how well his words come off the page, into our minds, giving vision to all that unfolds.

emotional ride
Brilliant and truly engrossing story, love all the hero’s male and female, and loathe and more the baddies, such is the power of Wilbur Smith as a number one author, that I have such an emotional tie with his characters, have already brought books 2-3
