This was a very readable and engaging history of the complex and often confusing conflict in South Sudan. A definite must read for anyone with interests in the region.

The author goes back in history to give the context for the horrifying and violent war crimes that have been committed in the many decades of South Sudanese experience with slavery, oppression, civil war and ethnic conflict.

This is the best introductory book on South Sudan.

As European I'd always heard about Sudan as a country of an infinite war without really understanding the situation.This book really help me discover the history of the region and tribes, the main events of the conflicts, the independence and illusion of a better country.The book is really well documented and I highly recommended to anyone who is interested to know more.
