Vedic Mathematics or Sixteen Simple Mathematical Formulae from the Vedas New edition

I was studying for quantitative portion of grad school exams and found this book essential in cracking the tests. Being able to square any 2 digit number in my head under 5 seconds and any cube almost as quickly helped me finish the Quant portion of the gmat and gre with time to spare--and with perfect scores. Many more tips with multiplying, dividing, cubing, finding decimals of fractions, etc. wish i was taught this earlier.How someone can rate this book lower and cite it as too complex is nice irony. The underlying theme seems to be that this type of real understanding of numbers and their manipulation is essential and should be taught in every elementary level in every country. It should be standard, not some "complex" bag of chicanery designed to wow people drinking cocktails. That the complaint is too difficult is further proof of this need.I guess the best compliment I can give is that I will be using this book and others like it to teach my kids in the future.

This book was given to me by a friend from India. I just have to say that this book is inspiring in such a way that it provides a new way of thinking in Mathematics. What I found most fascinating is that this way of thinking has been around for over 100 years and very few people know about it! It's a pity this is not taught in American schools because it gives a different perspective on how to solve problems - actually a much easier way to solve problems. If you have kids or you yourself want to solve problems easier (and faster), I strongly recommend this book.The majority of the American public is blind about the rest of the world's great achievements, not just mathematics, but also the arts and sciences. Truly unfortunate.Vince

If you're looking for quicker ways to do calculations in your head, these methods work. Some people are calling them tricks. In a sense, they are, but that doesn't make them less useful. But be warned about this printing...The cover and binding both seem quite solid, but the paper is really thin. Also, my copy had large rips in the paper on pages 227 - 234. Luckily Amazon's return policy is excellent, so I'm returning it and hoping the paper back binding is better.And as side note, the origin story of these tools is incredibly sketchy and seems it was to sell more books. Someone finds these plates, he translates and expounds upon them into 16 manuscripts, but loses the manuscripts *just* before they were to be sent to the printers. Somehow, he finds one manuscript (only the first one) decades later and publishes it right before his death. If he did write 15 others, it's a shame only one was printed. But it sure seems fishy. And actually sounds a lot like Joseph Smith and the origins of the Book of Mormon.Whether or not the origin story is true, the methods taught are valid. But the paper in this printing is *REALLY* thin, and mine had some large tears in the middle of some of the pages.***UPDATE AUG 24, 2012***The paperback version of this book arrived today. It's the same book, but a different publisher. Other than the obviously different cover, the paper in the book is substantially higher quality than in the hardcover one on this page. It's a pretty decent softcover, though I do wish it was the paperback's pages in the hardcover binding. Oh well. I prefer pages that will withstand general turning of pages better.

Okay, Okay, I just get excited when I find a good product and sometimes I get beside myself. Folks we bought this book for homeschoolin' the kiddies and since I always go through the books Momma uses for that I decided to totally go through this thang. Was I ever entertained! Now what this books does is use some fun shortcuts and some interestin algorithms for fairly simple math problems...mostly the math problems encountered in elementary school and some more advanced. It appears these kinds of shortcuts was developed by the Indians. You know the ones in India, not the ones on Gunsmoke. Well we decided to incorporate it into our curriculum and th' little scholars love it! Now we teach 'em th old fashioned way first; I guess what George Bush would call 'Murkan mathematics; then when they're comfortable with that we spring this on 'em. Now note, we get them ta using traditional algorithms first; th long way I guess you could call it. When they can do it the 'Murkan way in they sleep we make 'em do it this way. They love it and it gives them a totally different way of lookin at mathematics. One thang's fer sure, they ain't jaded with math like the little wankers I hear complaining about math bein "hard". G-D I hate hearin that s***. Now for them wankers that (fake a nasally Brit-voice) have studied HIGHER MATHEMATICS, I've got this to say; I give this book 5 stars because it's fun for the kiddies. What effin wanker would give a book 2 stars for bein' interestin to kids. Nobody but a effin 'taard or mayor Bloomberg would try to replace traditional methods o teachin math with this. then, why even address them idjits? Oh, I'm sorry, then nobody'd know I had studied HIGHE MATHEMATICS and so had HIGHER SENSIBILITIES. As for them wankers that wish this had been offered to them in their schol, I ask ya, would ya have studied it or would ya have set there and picked yer big nose the same way ya did studying the old fashioned way? People, if ya want a interestin and fun math book; if ya want to entertain th kiddies; if ya want somethin to do on cold winter nights around th stove besides watchin what's on the Eye of Sauron, then get this book. It'' enlarge yer ingnorant minds.

Best book on quicker arithmetical calculations based in 16 sub sutras...It is an original version of Vedic Mathematics all other books are it's copy in materials.

It's easy to understand. Book quality is Good. Context are good sometimes even funny. Writer has done a great job in making this Book interesting. Book is really good. Only problem if any will be with reader's mind as I, myself found it intriguing. You need to practice it multiple times before jumping to any conclusions. Nice Work.👍🏻
