This is the second one I bought (for a friend) because I have the same one and is simple and easy to use
Works as advertised. This is the second one I bought (for a friend) because I have the same one and is simple and easy to use. I'm assuming most parents will only need/want to use the rectal thermometer for younger infants because it's supposedly most accurate for newborns.I also have a braun ear thermometer which I always use first. If it did show a fever and I wanted to know more accurately the temperature, I would double check with this. It's not exactly fun to shove this up your sick baby's rectum, but this item makes it quite "easy." The tip is short so it's designed not to be over-inserted so you won't have to worry. The reading time is fast, sometimes as fast as a few seconds. The only issue with it is that sometimes you can't hear the audible beep for whatever reason, but if you look at the thermometer the and the readings stop and won't change (usually after 8-10 seconds). Overall process is fairly painless. It's nice to have a dedicated rectal thermometer so you don't really need all those multi function type of rectal thermometers. Just need it to be easy, simple and accurate!

Easy, accurate and the right price
I did alot of research on which thermometer to get and after my research this was the best in terms of length of providing a reading and accuracy. I was specifically looking for these criteria when deciding which way to go. Once I received this I was surprised how small it was but do not fooled, this is the best!We have used for 3 months and it is simple to use and the readings have been quick. I can't determine accuracy as I don't have any other types of thermometers to compare it with but will rely on consumer reports. He doesn't fuss when I use it either (I do put a bit of vaseline on the tip to decrease any of the discomfort of placing something cold into my baby). I will definitely be recommending this to other people, as a pharmacist and before I was a parent, I was more inclined to go with the ear thermometers however with the added expenses of these thermometers, this type of thermometer comes out shining. When you are a new parent all you want is simple and easy but also you want to be able to trust it. The problem with ear thermometers is you need to make sure you put it in exactly right or you will have a range of values.I am very happy with my purchase and have not considered any other thermometers.

Worth its weight in gold - I own a bunch of these and love them!
I love Safety 1st products because they are well thought-through items (they must have an army of mothers on staff). After 3 kids, I have a list of must-haves in my head for new moms. This is at the very top. It's great! Using a rectal thermometer is terrifying at first (what if I stick it in too far and hurt my baby?!), but it's a must (IMO) with infants in order to get a truly accurate temperature.PROS:-The plastic curve on this acts as a safety barrier so you don't stick the rectal thermometer in too far). It only allow you to stick the probe in a half an inch or so. You won't realize how awesome that is, until you go to the pediatrician for the first time, and the nurse goes to use a super long probe, and you hold your breath, hoping she/he doesn't go too far.-Cheap (again, worth it's weight in gold)CONS: NONE!I have bought several of these over the years because we keep them in multiple places. It's also the first thing I gift to new moms (yes, I know, practical gift instead of adorable onesie). Do yourself a favor, mama, and get this thermometer!!

Tips from an MD mom: invest in a rectal thermometer for newborns
I'm a physician (for adults) with a toddler. I used this when my son was a baby and give this item as a baby gift. For newborns, you should only take rectal temperatures, as a fever in new babies is very worrisome and requires immediate medical attention. A rectal temperature is the MOST ACCURATE method for taking a temperature (in any person, but especially newborns). Even if you never need this, it's an important investment for potential middle of the night fevers or worries that your newborn might have a fever. Please also have a dedicated rectal thermometer so that you do not introduce germs into the mouth after using one rectally. Although you could use any thermometer in both orifices, I like the fact this has a guard so that you do not accidentally go too deep as you are dealing with a squirming child. Adding a small amount of lubricant can also help and will not affect the temperature.

Pretty Good for Sticking Up Baby's Bum
I feel weird rating a rectal thermometer with an I love it rating of five stars, because who really loves a rectal thermometer, but this one has been solid for us. As new parents we are also new to butt temperatures. We like this one better than the one that comes in the generic safety baby kit because it has a short probe so you can't stick it in too far. This is good for a squirmy baby. The one that comes in the generic baby kit has a longer probe because it can also be used orally, so this one is good because you don't ever have to question, did i use this thermometer in the butt before sticking it in your kids mouth, because you will know that it did indeed go in there. Yuck. Even though my baby's butt is adorable, i don't ever want to put a butt thermometer in her mouth down the road no matter how clean.Another nice feature is that it shows the last temperature taken when you turn it on. This is good, because in your sleep deprived state, you may forget something like that. And if a little baby is sick, you will be taking the temperature pretty often. On a related note, i would say to take care when you constantly stick a thermometer up a baby's bum, it can loosen things up in there. I have taken the thermometer out once only to be met with an explosive shot of baby poo. In my face. Not cool baby.
