New life for my carpet!
This vacuum is the best I've ever owned. As a dog breeder working with a double coated breed, I was looking for a vacuum that would pick up more hair, dander, and sand than my other vacuums had. This model ranked highest in 2015 on Consumer Reports for pet hair pickup, and between that, the other reviews, and the affordable price, I decided to try it. This is the 2nd Hoover carpet product I've bought, and in both cases, the way the designers were able to maximize ease of use and tool effectiveness has really impressed me.One note in response to other reviews about the vacuum overheating. The first time I used it, the handle grew very warm. While it was troublesome, the vacuum itself didn't falter or give off any scent of burning wires. It hasn't happened since then. The features:1) I love the easy setting changes that let me move from carpet to hard floors without having to grab hoses and attachments. There's a pedal to halt the brush rotation, and a dial to lower the nose... and that's it.2) The suction is truly impressive. I've been blown away by the amount of fine dust particles (dander) and sand picked up in a single vacuum session. Also, my carpet is just a year old but had been "aging" quickly because there's been a lot of traffic and wear and tear this past year despite steam cleaning and other care. I was thrilled to see that this vacuum was powerful enough to stand up the strands that had been packed down. The result is that the carpet has regained the soft springiness that I loved when it first was installed. However. With this power comes a little danger too. I noticed a small patch of carpet where the yarn had become frayed, untwisted, and frazzled. I believe this happened after I vacuumed a few times with the beater bar level too low (I was trying to maximize dirt extraction). Fortunately, a pass or two with my (Hoover) steam cleaner was enough to trigger the fibers to retwist themselves and I no longer can find the spot that had gotten frazzled.3) The HEPA filter is doing a great job; there isn't a cloud of spun-up dust in the sunlight when I'm done. I love that this filter is washable.4) The attachments all ride along on the vacuum, and the hose disconnects easily. This has allowed me to do stairs and spot cleaning without having to run back to the closet to grab more gear.5) The mini beater bar attachment is excellent. I was skeptical when I saw the beater would be rotated by suction power, since the last time I had a vacuum like that, it was absolutely pathetic. To my utter surprise, the attachment whirrs to a frenzy pitch and remains powerful when working on stairs, couches, etc. I no longer dread doing my steps, and am looking forward to using it in my van!6) The cord rewind foot pedal is just... fun. My dogs pounce when I recall the cord, so I've got to do it carefully to avoid the plug whipping around and injuring anyone (including me).The wish list:1) I wish there was a dirt indicator light to help me focus on the carpet sections that are dirtier.2) I wish the lever that opens the canister bottom wasn't SO easy to trigger. Because there's so much fine dust picked up in my house, I don't like emptying the canister by dropping the bottom off as designed. Instead, I unscrew the top half of the canister so I can knock off the dirt that cakes on the central suction column into the the debris heap, and then empty the pile of dirt once. Unfortunately, I tend to "hug" the canister when unscrewing the top. A a few times I've accidentally hugged the lever, and the bottom dropped out and not all the dirt made it to the waste basket. I've now duct taped the lever so it can't open unless I mean to.

If you're not sure, buy it anyway
I bought this to replace my faithful, but hella heavy Kirby. The Kirby still works great, but I absolutely hate hauling it up and down stairs and messing with pulling the head on and off and all the attachments (first world lazy person problems). The Hoover is so slick. It assembles in less than 5 minutes and it's ready to go.Suction & alignmentOther reviewers were displeased with how the canister doesn't align perfectly with the suction tube and they say it causes poor suction. That has not been my experience. The alignment isn't perfect, but the rubber lips on the suction tube line up well enough that when you turn on the vacuum, the suction is impressive and there are no gaps. The suction isn't as powerful as the Kirby, but almost. Good enough that I can easily make the trade off (and I'm one of those 'more and bigger is alway better' people).Blowing & NoiseThe Hoover doesn't emit a hurricane of air from underneath that blows away hair and dust and debris that need to be vacuumed up (which my Kirby does). However, I find I need to vacuum directly over a spot to suck up whatever is there--the Kirby can be about an inch away from it and still grab it, if it hasn't blown it away. This doesn't bother me, but it might bother others. Noise: Kirby is notorious for being extremely loud. The Hoover is marginally quieter. Then again, if you're going to use something with a motor in an enclosed space, yes, it's going to sound loud.Hose & CordThe Hoover's hose and cord aren't as long as I'd like, but, again, it doesn't bother me because my place is small enough that these aren't a big deal. It also doesn't come with as many attachments (just the two pet heads and the extension tube to put on the end of the hose) but the pet heads are straight up magical. My couch was very clean to begin with, but the Hoover and the pet head still picked up lint and hair I didn't think was there. The canister is so easy to empty. I stick it in the trash can, push the button, and then bang it on the side a few times, and I'm good to go again. No bags spilling, no buying refill bags. Can't believe I only paid $99 for this. Extremely pleased.

HIGHLY recommend it!
I've always had the old Kenmore canister vacuums from Sears, and I finally got fed up with them breaking and decided to buy something better. I'm never going back!!! This vacuum is amazing, I can't believe what I've been missing. I had to empty the canister twice before I finished when I used it the first time, and I have a small house.I have a short hair dog and long carpets, and I never realized how much hair was still in the carpet from my old vacuum. I was quite horrified actually! The suction is unbelievably strong. I accidentally sucked up a pair of my husbands jeans, when before I could just push them out of the way with the beater bar. This vacuum also eliminates ALL odor, when before I would always smell dog-air blowing out the back of my vacuum. The turbo brush is so convenient for bedspreads and dog beds, and it fits onto our shop vac so I was even able to take it out and do the backseat of my car.I haven't had any issues with the auto cord retract feature either, it's so much easier than struggling with the old tug-and-hope-the-cord-retracts style. I honestly have nothing bad to say about this vacuum, and HIGHLY recommend it, particularly for pet owners.

Great value, but faulty on/off switch
The vacuum works well, definitely has decent suction. The floor adjustments and small pet brush are great and the vacuum is compact which is great for closet space. After about 6 months though the on/off button wouldn't work and the vacuum was stuck "On" as soon as it was plugged in. We took the vacuum apart to fix the switch and found that when it was assembled, the manufacturer pinched one of the wires so we were glad that we had to open it up. Otherwise, who knows if/when the wire cover would have worn down to expose it and become a fire hazard.
