One year review. Put it through it's paces.
I don't think you can get a better (optioned) amp for the money.Setup:Front 2 speakers are Klipsch RB-51 II Reference Series Bookshelf Loudspeakers.Rear's are same size as the RB-51's only Polk. Very accurate.Sub is a Bic Acoustech PL-200 and is a monster. It will shake you... from the other side of the house.TV is a Samsung 4K 55" connected thru HDMI / ARC. One remote for everything except TIVO...Setup:Ran ethernet under house from office router to a new second wireless router. Gave it a unique name from #1 router. Then plugged TV and Yamaha ethernet into the new router. Setup guest account on #2's wireless for, um, guests.Positives:No issues with streaming anything. Youtube, Pandora, online anything and everything sounds and looks good.Upscaling also works very well. Nice to see older shows I know are VGA looking smooth.Having an app on my phone to power-up this amp is pretty awesome. From that app I can stream Pandora, online radio stations, iTunes and much more. Not being a morning person, to crank up some super-loud Zepplin in the morning while still in bed, when the amp is in the living room, is the highlight of my mornings. 1500 sq ft house and living room is on the other side of the house and this amp powers those speakers to quite a loud level. Great hearing clear, well powered, speakers from a distance. The app relies on the fact that the amp and the phone are on the same (wireless) router. So if you're like me, and have two WAP's with 2 different names, make sure your phone is connected to the same network as your TV and Yamaha amp. Then you'll love what you can do.The app kinda' rocks. Switching from Pandora, to net radio, to a full 12 hour long youtube playlist on my Note3, while sitting in the hot tub or from the garage is something everyone should experience. Also, Yamaha offers enough control on it's app and remote to handle all the switching I do between the TV, Xbox, Firestick, and CD carousel. ARC knows when I go from TV to youtube app and the Yamaha automatically adjusts so that it all comes through the Yamaha. No user input required.Negatives:Setting up a "scene" is like performing brain surgery. I still haven't done it. I thought it would be cool to assign a sound move to different inputs, but I haven't really needed it. I keep it on 7 channel output, even though mine is a 5.1, and the sound is perfect for me.The display is spartan IMHO. Honestly, I'd like to see a Android based interface. Minds would be blown. However the Yamaha menu, viewed from the TV, works just fine. The auto-speaker tuner was pretty far out. My larger living room and vaulted ceilings probably had something to do with it though.. Plus my taste in music prefers a higher sub woofer level than what Yamaha engineers suggest. No big, after auto-tuning levels, I went back and fine tuned to my taste. Just keep the owners manual at the ready in case you start to feel lost.Wish list:A simplified directions that shows all that ARC can do for the end user.An app that is made specifically for this amp. Not one that covers this year thru that year and 25 different models, of which, only work with 75% of them.A smart remote. Everyone who uses this has multiple inputs. Why not offer a Yamaha programmable remote, like the Harmony but just for Yamaha and the top 100 AV components like Samsung smart TV's,Summary after a year:Very happy about buying this Yamaha. I would suggest it to a friend.

Great receiver, packed with features
I wanted to get a new receiver with the purchase of a new TV. My old receiver, a Denon AVR-3805, did not have any HDMI input/output ports and the center channel would produce a static sound from time to time. I also wanted to eliminate some of the cable mess behind my entertainment stand with all the bulky component cables/optical cables for just a single HDMI cable.Your not going to see any difference in quality going from component to HDMI, same with audio. HDMI only introduces/supports later audio encoding like all the HD audio codecs, and 3D or 4K for video. Don't buy a new receiver thinking that because your switching to HDMI everything is going to be oh so awesomer :)The first thing I noticed about the receiver out of the box, compared to my older Denon was wow - it's allot lighter than I thought it'd be. It should be I guess, considering it's not quite as powerful as my previous Denon. It took me a long time to clean up all the old wires and pull the old receiver out. I highly recommend when you first hook this receiver up with all the other wires/devices that you do so loosely. Meaning have all the wires just on the floor, going to each speaker and device to test that it all works before running them under floorboards or behind your entertainment center, etc.Speaker setup with the YPAO mic made things very easy, the GUI interface for the speaker setup covers everything I need it too. I made some manual adjustments of the DB levels for the center channel and surround speakers but nothing significant. The receiver hooks up to the network easily, and can stream all of my music from my PC. I can also use air play on my iPhone to stream music through the receiver, even from a YouTube app. This receiver is driving 2 Polk LSi 15 floor standing speakers, a Polk LSiC, 2 Polk LSi/FX surround speakers, Bose subwoofer, and 2 smaller satellite Tivoli speakers giving me the 7.1 surround sound. Some would suggest that this receiver doesn't have enough power to drive everything I have hooked up to it, but for me it works. The one thing I had to do was hold the power button when I first turned on the receiver to change the OHM down to 6, which is what Yamaha recommends you do for 4 ohm speakers. I turn the volume on the receiver up to 30DB, and it's clear/loud at that point and I can turn it up much louder. The thing with this receiver, is there are no pre-outs for an additional amplifier to drive your speakers....so if you really think you need an amplifier step up and get the RX-V775. For me, it's overkill and unnecessary.I have really enjoyed re-watching a few films that I have that have in 7.1 audio, and just overall the movie audio just has more detail to it. I can't say that I'm blown away by the audio, which i just thinks speaks volumes to how good my previous Denon amp really was. When I play music from my PC, I turn on the direct to hear it out of the front 2 channels and it sounds beautiful. I don't typically mess around with any of the pro logic sound effects, so I can't comment to those as I think it ruins the audio of movie/music as it was meant to be heard. The other nice thing about this receiver, is that I can bring up the on screen menu at anytime and modify any setting. I assume that's pretty standard with HDMI receivers, but it's new to me and I love it!I can't really think of any cons with this receiver, and i would recommend this receiver.

Bummer experience
I've bought nothing but Yamaha products for the last 40 years now. I have 3 other amplifiers at home in various rooms and have never had an issue with them other than just normal problems due to age.The issue with this one is when changing soundfields the screen turns off for 3 seconds, and then it resumes. Or if you're trying multiple soundfields the sound cuts out for a few seconds and then comes back. It's hard to make comparisons of different soundfields when there's a time lapse between each selection. But that's not what really peeved me off.It arrived with no manual! This is the first time buying a Yamaha product that no manual was included. I placed a call with the vendor asking for a manual and received no reply. Sure I can see one online but then I have to go room to room to see how to do something which is time consuming and very frustrating. Every time I want to understand something about the amp I have to start up the computer, open the pdf and find the section and then start going back and forth to compare differences. I've been very loyal to Yamaha for many years but with these problems I am rethinking my choice for the main theater room. I've sent an email by way of Amazon as well. If I hear from them I will update this review. Otherwise you may want to rethink buying from vendors other than Yamaha or new from Amazon.Too bad, Yamaha has been great until this.
