The Method R Guide to MASTERING ORACLE TRACE DATA Paperback – July 26, 2013

I've been a DBA for almost 30 years and deal with Oracle for about 19 and I'm responsible for about 200 instances and 30 Tbytes. I've read lots of books and what impresses me about Cary is that he's not one of those authors that writes book after book just copying and pasting. He's serious. And this book is very deep and deals with something most people do not know and that does help drill down onto performance issues. I've been using traces for years and it really solves issues. And Cary masters it. I also took his online course on the book and seeing it alive makes concepts be really understood. I do recommend both the course and the book.Heitor- Robert Bosch Brazil

This is one of those publications that should be on the shelf of every Oracle DBA who wants to know more about performance tuning and importantly, how to diagnose and respond to performance bottlenecks. Oracle trace data can be intimidating and obscure - on a good day. Cary's book talks through the mechanics, semantics and nuances of interpreting this data to make sense of it and how it pertains to your application SQL.Highly recommended.

A refresher on the earlier book

I have had the opportunity to have the author come and help my company and we have implemented many of his ideas. Its great to have a quick reference to the process when we have to start again on finding out "the why" something is running slow. I recommend this book to anyone that needs to working with application teams to help them optimize the SQL they are using against Oracle.

This book is a MUST for the hard working database administrator who has to troubleshoot performance without the benefit of Oracle Tuning and Diagnostics pack. It would also be good for those DBAs who rely too heavily on tools like OEM to get a new perspective on a different method of tuning.

I have been reading Cary Millsap's papers for years since he was head of the performance group at Oracle. Use this as your core troubleshooting strategy and broaden out from there.

Great book

If you have read "Optimizing Oracle Performance" then this is a great follow up. If you haven't read "Optimizing Oracle Performance" then this is a great place to start. This book is another great work from Cary Millsap. It is written in a logical and flowing manner that builds concepts and ideas through examples. I liked the explain, show and understand style of presentation. The scientific style and presentation is easily read without getting buried in the theory. This book is very practical and lessons learned from this book are very real life. Don't be fooled by the trend to all memory databases . . . being able to understand and "Thinking Clearly about Performance" is an essential skill.

Nothing new here. Much better to buy Antognini's Troubleshooting Oracle Performance
