i thought one of these will fit both left & right sides? why does this say the right mirror?

They make a left and right side mirror,due to the CRG Logo on the back of the mirror, and the way it's bolted to the bike as well. For example. If you were to put the Left side mirror on the right side, the CRG logo on the back side of the mirror will be upside down. And the arm to the mirror will be also. So, all bolts will be upside down and WILL NOT look clean. The bolts only bolt in one direction. So, you can't just flip them over. I've tried... So, to answer your question, you could use a right side for either sides.. But it will not look good. trust me, you want the correct side. L and R.

I haven't really measure them, I think they are about 3 inches.

do you need plugs for the ends of the bars

Depends. I got the adapters and my bar end screws were to short, so I shaved my grips down and put them on my clips ons. If your bar ends are not an issue I'm sure they will fit no mods necessary.
