A fast-living, cynical London music executive (Danny Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate fish out of water as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he s forced to re-evaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means. Starring Daniel Mays, James Purefoy, Tuppence Middleton, David Hayman, Dave Johns, and Noel Clarke, FISHERMAN S FRIENDS was shot on location in Cornwall and comes from director Chris Foggin (KIDS IN LOVE) with a screenplay by Nick Moorcroft (FINDING YOUR FEET), Meg Leonard (FINDING YOUR FEET) and Piers Ashworth (ST.TRINIAN'S). Review: A (PROPER-JOB) DELIGHT TO WATCH - - The film, a true story though clearly tailored for entertainment tells of how in 2010 a group of ten Cornish locals based in Port Isaac, Cornwall, are despite their reservations persuaded to record a demo album in the vain hope of getting a recording contract. On a reluctant trip to Cornwall for a stag-weekend, Danny (Daniel Mays) hears a group of locals performing for their friends and indeed tourists at the head of the beach at Port Isaac and was immediately taken with the music they were singing, so much so, he believed that the sound could be commercial despite the average age of the singers. He mentioned it to his boss who'd travelled with him and was told to try and sign them up, however, turns out that Danny was being wound-up by those that had travelled to Cornwall with him, they didn't see the band being of commercial appeal. However, Danny does and will do everything he can to get the Fisherman's Friends a deal. With romance in the air for Danny with band member Jim's (James Purefoy) daughter Alwyn (Tuppence Middleton) A delightful film with delightful settings that'll have you both singing-along and often laughing. A genuine feel-good movie....give it a spin. The group formed back in 1995, mainly with fishermen and lifeguards from the Port Isaac area, they were shot to national fame when music producer Rupert Cristie and DJ Johnny Walker came across them leading to a healthy contract to record albums for Universal Music 2010 (Did invest in the group's first couple myself)) They sang folk favourites and of course sea shanties. i myself lived in Cornwall for 5 years (late 80's to early '90s) because of my work and was able to visit the charming Atlantic-Coast North Cornwall village several times. Back then you could park on the beach when the tide was out, not sure one can these days. (Of course, the TV series Doc Martin is filmed in Port Isaac) Review: Uplifting & enjoyable - Unlikely group becomes a singing success is so heartening, warm, showing human frailty, misconceptions, humour & yet friendships remain strong, binding. The sad moments were so poignant that I too shed tears, but the overall feel of success, comradeship & unity throughout, like a guiding light. Brilliant performances throughout and watch out, you may catch yourself singing along to the well known shanties, I did & transported me to a time in childhood. Do watch it, more than once, please, it will lift your spirits.

A nice British film based on a true story
Because it was based on a true story it rang true even if the facts had been dramatised etc. We were unable to get to the cinema when it as released so we decided to purchase the DVD. The singing was good and the scenery in Cornwall spectacular as normal. Easy to watch and very enjoyable

Excellent, "feel happy" film, will lift your spirit!
I first saw this film on a night flight home from USA. Had a really hard time not to wake other passengers with laughter and trying not to sing along, especially with "What Shall we do with the Drunken Sailor". Since bought the DVD and CD from real Fishermans Friends. Great tuneful songs, lovely harmony. The film only shows snippets of the songs, they are much longer on CD, but you definitely get the flavour. Really, really enjoyable.

Well made.
I loved it, and have watched it many times despite only having had it a few weeks, I suppose it is the type of film you will either love or hate, for me it is full of humour, good music, and great characterisation. It does not waste time on un-necessary footage between sequences, it cuts straight to the chase, and even the minor roles are extremely well played. Definitely added to a short list of all-time-favourites. Best £5 quid I have spent in years.

When I first saw this movie, I thought it was great. Then I found it was based on a true story. I have since heard the original group. Watch this and feel better

Heartwarming, lovely, and transporting! Keep Haulin' Buoys!
I was determined to see this in the USA, so I bought a region free dvd player here on Amazon ($38) and this DVD. If you love Cornwall and Sea Shanties you will be very very happy. Worth all the expense and special effort. This DVD does not play on USA players, so be warned. Buy a cheap region free dvd player and enjoy!
