what size is the basket? and how long is the handle?

Handle is about 4.5 feet long, basket about 12 X 6 inches. The dimensions are not that important, what IS important is that you actually see the signs of sand fleas (we call em sand crabs) before you go out and waste your time. As the water retreats, you can see the bumps--last one I saw was about 12 inches wide by 3 feet long. If you dip into that zone, even with bare hands, it is very easy to collect the sand crabs.

Can you take it apart to put in a suitcase

The only thing that comes apart is the shaft from the basket.

What is the length when taken apart ? I need to travel on a plane.

The rake's overall length is approx. 50". The rake is about 12" long and the handle is about 38" tall. The rake is connected to the handle by two screws about 10 and 11 inches from the bottom of the rake. The rake can be placed under the seat easily and the handle can be placed in the overhead with its 2' inch diameter. Tough the rake is hollow you'll have to check with TSP or your carrier to see if you can bring what looks like a pipe onboard. I can anticipate TSP asking you what is this thing you're trying to bring onboard. Come to think of it, the handle is about the height of a cane so if they allow canes onboard planes they shouldn't have a problem with your handle. Good luck.
