Your browser does not support HTML5 video.  As the risk of hitting a live wire I bought this as I wanted a display.Takes some getting used to, it says it self calibrates...I was trying to figure out where a live wire runs up the wall, it detects wires but sometimes doesnt make sense where you think it should detect it but doesn't so that was confusing.May take some more time getting used to it , however where I needed to drill didn't have a wire where I needed so its served it's purpose well.Havent tested the other features for detecting studs or wood. It came with a Duracell so even better.May update this later.

I purchased this as we are moving into a new house, and I don't want to start drilling through pipes or wires!Easy to use, it seems to detect metal, wires or pipes in my old house perfectly well.Solid walls, so no way to test the stud detection, but I expect it will work as promised

Great value for money and works exactly as described. I tested it on a wall where I already knew the location of the studs and it found them with ease, correctly locating the centre of each stud.Seems little point in spending more money on the more expensive devices... this one works. Comes with a 9v battery and clear instructions... all in all a winner .

This device is simple and straightforward to use and appears to be able to find pipes, wires and other metal objects reasonably accurately. You do need to read the instructions though to get it to work well. Having done that I have found it to be a great little tool. What the instructions don't seem to mention though is how to turn it off. The power button needs a long press of 2-3 seconds.

I am always a bit sceptical about a product when its listed as Amazon's Choice, incase there's some vested interest. But on this occasion their recommendation was well warranted. Straight out of the box it's just so simple to use. On stud partition walls it detected the studs easily, and first time. It not only highlights the center of the studs but also the edges for precise positioning. I tested it on celing joists with similarly positive results. The battons between the joist are set deeper and were still detected in normal stud mode. But the deep mode returned much more detailed positioning of the battons. Detection of electrical cables was usually straightforward and is essential when trying to avoid disasters. If you experience detection of live cables over a wide area, you just need to place the scanner over an area with a high reading and recalibrate. This will reduce sensitivity to provide a higher degree of accuracy in those situations. You should remember that the cables must be live in order to be detected. Some of my central heating pipes are in the concrete flooring and I had some doubts whether they would be detected. But the Metal scan mode made light work of it. In this price range I don't beleive you will find a more comprehensive and capable scanner. Just a good all round performer.

Bought this because I wanted to put up a wall bracket near power source and wanted to confirm where the power cables and the wall studs were. An obvious reason I guess. Firstly it doesn't come with a battery included so I needed to get a P9 battery (rectangular type). Once powered up the controls are relatively intuitive with two buttons, one button on the front for power and mode - stud(wood)/metal/electrical - and a button at the side for scanning. Unfortunately their enclosed instructions are a little confusing; the instruction to calibrate the unit is not clear, the electrical warning icon isn't clearly shown, and the instruction to keep the scanning button pressed as you scan appears to be incorrect, pressing it the once appears to work... So apart from some badly written instructions the device works, it discovers and pinpoint the studs and power cables so I'm happy with it. I'd recommend the device. It come with a £5 Amazon voucher offer although (I'm not personally availing myself of it) so at the price of £14.99 it could cost as little as £9.99. I think it is good value, it does the job, I don't know how long it will last but I'd recommend it.

The tool is pretty compact it comes witha battery and very detailed instruction of how to use in all modes.Was able to hang a nice wooden shelf using this tool. It's good with drywalls, thou they say that it may use with plaster walls. If you don't want to spend a fortune on good stud detector and at the same time be sure about result you'll get - this tool is your choise.

I am always nervous of drilling into walls, and keep telling myself to " get a wall scanner".I spotted this one when doing my Christmas Amazon shopping and at under £20 ,I bit the bullet and bought it.The instructions are clear and it is really simple to use , just insert the battery ( included, a welcome change for cheaper items!) and off I went.It fits well in the palm of your hand : compact enough to be comfortable but big enough to be able to read the screen clearly.I tested it by running it over an area where I knew there were electrical components and I got a loud beep and warning symbol - that's good enough for me. ! For occasional use just for DIY, no need for an expensive " bells and whistles" gizmo.
