Simple straight solid
It is a perfect tool for sailor or hunter. It picks signal quickly. It takes some time to learn available screens and functions, but after it is easy to use.I would say it's a perfect interface with available amount of buttons and screen size.Screen is black and gray, and is perfectly readable in all conditions. Please, note, there are no maps, only coordinates or direction to a way point. It keeps all the stored data with no batteries installed.Reasonably accurate, sometimes within 3 metes, sometimes within 15 meter, which is enough to find a harbor, return to your favorite spot in the forest, or to get back to the car.Works well in medium to heavy wooded forests.Good battery life.Feels way more better then modern units with all the updates, glitches and a lot of useless features.Would strongly recommend.

It's Great at what it does
It's Great at what it does, and it does exactly what it is supposed to. I did not want fancy maps etc, all I wanted was directionality and GPS locations, but it does do far more than that. It is not more or no less precisely as advertised which is exactly and precisely what I wanted. I would Recommend this GPS unit for those who don't want the expensive frills but just want the basics. One last note, it has been accurate at time from 15'.6" to within 5'-6' of a given point. This unit is not good enough for use by a professional land surveyor, no fancy maps etc, but is the perfect unit for someone, who is just trying to find out where they are, using a fixed point(their coordinates), or for that someone who is just trying to survive and get home.

Use BaseCamp + MapSource to export tracks, routes, and waypoints
While the device seems to work as advertised, I had issues figuring out how to export tracks, routes, and waypoints from the device to my computer. The manual and the Garmin website are not at all helpful. It turns out you have to install Garmin software in this order on your computer:1) BaseCamp (free from Garmin - Google it)2) MapSource (free from Garmin - Google it)You can't install MapSource unless BaseCamp is already installed first.BaseCamp isn't mentioned anywhere in the manual or the website, but you need it in order to install MapSource. The MapSource page doesn't even mention BaseCamp. It just sends you to purchase maps (which are not compatible with the 72h).I only found this information on a GPS forum after extensive Googling. The information needs to be more widely available. To actually create .gpx files I use both programs. MapSource allows me to transfer data from the 72h to the computer but crashes when I try to export a .gpx to the hard drive - and the file is empty. It also crashes when I try to export a .gdb - but the file DOES get written.I next use BaseCamp to convert the .gdb to a .gpx, which is what I can import elsewhere like ridewithgps.com, gpsvisualizer.com and Google Maps. One thing I found entertaining is that the first "trip" recorded on the unit originated in Taiwan (presumably at the factory, where they tested it?) and ended in the US when I put in batteries and it first acquired satellites. So if anyone wants to visit the factory in Taiwan, now we know where it is, within 22 ft. LOLUPDATE 10/11/2011The computer interface is no longer working. If I plug the 72h into the computer while the 72h is on, the computer doesn't see it. Once plugged in it doesn't respond to buttons, even to turn off. If I plug in the 72h while it is off and then try to turn it on, it never boots up. It just sits there at the start screen that says "GARMIN" and doesn't ever get to the point where the text at the bottom says "GPS 72H Copyright 2002-2010 Garmin Ltd. or its subs.". And it won't respond to buttons. The only way to make it start responding again is to take out a battery. Also, it looks like water got into the battery compartment, because when I went to change the batteries this morning there were droplets in there.I left the battery and usb compartments open and that seemed to help because the 72h is talking to the computer again. From now on I will be putting it into a drybag. Waterproof, schmaterproof. :-/

excellent
I got this for a friend because he couldn't figure out how to set up a Amazon A/C . The price on this could not have been better. It's easy to use and set up . Black and white screen is fine . My buddy asked me to send it back because he couldn't figure out how to use it . Even after I spent two hours with him on it . Also my other friend down loaded instructions for him . He still didn't get it .This is a excellent GPS with a awesome price . I should have kept it for myself . But I already have a 76cx . The 76 is a good unit too . I my opinion the 72 is just as good only black and white .

Shipping mix up
The GPS arrived quickly and is prefect for my use. Unfortunately, the USB cable is shipped separately and lost in snail mail land. That is aggravating since I have tons of fishing numbers I wanted to upload to the new unit. Correcting this issue is more complicated than I thought.Satisfied but puzzled customer.

Outdated software
I ordered the 72H assuming that it had the same software as the 72 which included tides, marine nav aids, solar tables etc, but was disappointed to find that it didn't... I couldn't return it to the vendor, so am stuck with it. Then I find that Garmin has discontinued updating the nautical software on the 72 basic, so I have two outdated units that don't meet my needs. I originally used the 72 on my skiff on the BC coast and because of it's large easily read screen, was perfect. I also used it on my quad when running the beaches at lower tides and was able to determine when to get off the beach before I would get caught in the incoming tides.... Remote West Coast beaches are tricky that way. As I have hardwired by skiff, quad and dirt bike for the 72 series, I'm disappointed that I have wasted my money. My 60CSX is fine, but hard to read on the go....
