Little Dot MK2 MKII 6J1 X 2 6N6 X 2 Headphone Amp Amplifier Pre-Amp Tube

A review for the rest of us:If you are a hardcore tube amp user then I would suggest you skip this because this is not for you, this is for those people that are like me, a noob with tubes that has no clue.First let me say that this was not my first tube amp, the first time I purchased a tube amp I figured I would go big, buy the best rated, expensive, and best reviewed with the most tubes because all of that would mean I am getting the best tube amp I could get... correct? Maybe.... but I wouldn't know because I had no clue what I was doing, listening to or listening for. Tube amps are not as simple as plugging in your headphones and BAM! all new sounds and stark differences. I quickly found out that no matter what I did or what tubes I put on it, I wasn't getting that, so of course I had a faulty tube amp and immediately sent it back swearing that everything I read about tubes was a bunch of crap and a waste of time and money. After spending some time with high end headphones and a decent dac/amp, I began to hear the changes in music quality and when going back to my $30 and $80 headphones I could immediately tell the difference and understand what I was and was not hearing. It was at this point that I thought back to the tube experiment and decided to try it again, but instead of going all out and spending top of the line money for top of the line equipment I decided to look around for what was believed to be a good starter tube amp, enter the LD MKii.(all explanations from here forward are my noob terms and do not require expert dissection and argument)LD MKii - black box with box and four tubes on top. Blue power led, audio jack and volume on the face.[what the smaller black box encases is beyond me, nor do I care at this point. All I know is it works for me]Tubes - Large tubes are power tubes, Small tubes are pre-amp tubes.[This is where the magic happens, there is more to it but it was in *"tube rolling" that I found my sound]Headphones - Here is another thing that I did not understand where tube amps are concerned, for best results, dynamic driver headphones are the way to go.So now that I was armed with my HD800s, HD6xx, 1More triple driver and the LD MKii I started plugging things in and checking the sound.First thing I did was try it with my Sanskrit pro and then with my Aune X1S while cycling through my headphones on each. There was a slight difference between the two but to my ears (which are admittedly compromised) it wasn't enough for me to say you should use one over the other.Next I took a few days to listen to different types of music and compared it between the tube amp and Aune X7S because the X7S has an balanced xlr connection that I love on my planars. As I did this I began to hear the subtle differences and where the tube shined and where it did not. To me, the tube and my HD6xx were the best match based on what I like.Lastly, I began the task of *tube rolling. I did some research and found some of the more popular tubes that are paired with this amp. I eventually settled on the 7-Pin GE JAN 5654W for my pre and the Novosibirsk 6N6p / 6H6pi for my power. This pairing gave me the most amazing improvement on sound, again, based on what I like. I love all genres of music and have found that when listening to jazz, blues, quartets, trios, Cello, and classic rock (AC/CD, Metallica, Eagles and many others) that the combo flourished. The beauty of the sound in its fullness, warmth, separation and clarity was absolutely stunning. I will listen to other genres such as EDM and others that actually sounds better on my LCD 2 Closed to my ears. I have watched movies and it performs great in that space as well but again, it depends on the the type of movie it is, would I use it for Jurassic park or an MCU movie, sure, but again, I would prefer the LCD 2 Closed for that. The point to all this is that while you can buy a dac/amp combo or individual unit pairings and get perfect sound and balance, the tube will take the edge off of the perfection and dirty it up but in a most wonderful way. Tube amps are more about the perfection of imperfection like smudges on charcoal art and mayonnaise in a cake recipe. You wouldn't expect it to work but then you try it and you get that WTF moment when you realize how good it is. To me, the beauty of this amp is its simplicity and ease of use. Are there better amps out there, sure, but from personal experience, the LD MKii is the most inexpensive, easy to use introductory tube amp that will give great results.Annotation *Tube rolling does not mean place it on your desk and roll the round tubes across it over and over (you laugh but that is exactly what I thought it was until I looked it up). As best I understand it, rolling is when you install different types of tubes (they come with different materials and resistances) to get a different sound profile. You can mix and match different power and pre tubes to one another, but, never mix and match them to itself. From what I understand, you want your pre tubes to be the same to itself and power tubes to be the same to itself. Mixing them across brand and type to itself could have catastrophic consequences for your tubes and even the amp.Next thing of note is that you will want your tubes to be tested and matched, I can not explain the how, what and why but from everything I read, that is the best practice. Tested and matched means that the type of tube (pre or power) will be a tested and matched pair to itself not across types.Last thing I will say is that there is a jumper inside the unit that will effect the power output. I have not tried it and would suggest that if you feel you need to do this, go check out some of the reviewers that do a deep dive into the LD MKii, there is a lot of good information about this unit out there so don't be afraid to look it up or even ask questions because it is better to ask when you don't know than to assume and possibly cause irreparable damage. I know I don’t show up as a verified purchase, but I bought this amp from a factory authorized seller on EB (davidzhezhe). My research revealed this was essential should I need warranty support if anything goes wrong.What a fantastic little amp! Great sound and plenty of power! It definitely needs a minimum 50 hours of burn-in before it really starts to open up, and even with the stock tubes the sound is very nice (more on that to follow). Just remember that it’s recommended to turn it off every 4-6 hours and let it cool for at least 30 minutes. You don’t want to let this thing run unattended overnight, but with tubes you don’t want to be turning it on and off all the time either. Cold starts are where vacuum tubes are stressed the most. If your going to listen for an hour, take a break, and then come back, it’s better just to leave the amp on. I paired this amp with a Schiit Modi DAC and it was necessary to open it (Little Dot) up and set the gain switches to 10db so I could get the performance I needed with my high impedance phones and the low output of the Schiit. Now I have plenty of power on tap. If you’re planning on using the amp with high sensitivity/ low impedance headphones it’s better to use a lower gain setting which will give you more accurate control with the volume pot. I’ve used this amp with my Sennheiser HD-600’s and HD-598’s, Beyerdynamics DT-880’s (250 0hm), Audio Technica ATH-M50’s, V-Moda Crossfade M-100’s, Sony MDR-7506’s and MDR-V6’s, and even my Koss Porta Pros. I use Google Play Music 320kbps MP3’s as my primary source, and also CD’s played with my Onkyo C-7030. I would say that with either the MP3’s or the CD’s the HD-600’s are my favorites with the Little Dot, and for closed phones I like pairing it with the MDR-7506’s.The amp is built very well, and it’s the perfect size for my desk. The included RCA cables are okay, but I picked up some better ones. The RCA cable package also has 2 additional jumpers in case you lose one of the jumpers from inside the amp (used to switch things up for different tube families) The power cable has also been mentioned as an issue for some people, but it’s easy to replace with any 3 prong cable like you’d use with a computer tower or monitor. The manual will get you started, but it is really poorly written and contains many grammatical and even operational errors. The whole section on setting the gain switches is a disaster. If you have questions in this area (or any area) please feel free to ask me in the comments. The most up to date manual can be found at “littledot (dot) net” which is really a forum. Just go to the “Little Dot Models and Pricing” area, choose the MK II section and then look for the dropbox pdf link at the bottom below the pictures. And even that manual is wrong in the “Recommendations” section of the gain control table. All the recommendations are essentially backwards. For example: You want to use a gain setting of 10 for HIGH impedance/LOW sensitivity phones, not with LOW impedance/LOW sensitivity phones. The sensitivity part is right, but the impedance part is backwards as high impedance cans (say 250 ohm and higher) generally need more power or a higher gain setting to play as well as phones in the 32 to 60 ohm range. And don’t use phones (or buds) below 32 ohms with this amp.Well sound is really what it’s all about, and the Little Dot MK2 ii doesn’t disappoint. The amp has an excellent noise floor (as does the Schiit) and I have had no humming or ground loop issues as some have mentioned. Like I stated earlier, the sound was pretty decent with the stock tubes after about 50 hours of burn-in. Nice and warm; and when combined with the glow of the tubes in a darkened room and some sweet jazz, just makes the whole listening experience that much better. The amp also gave a noticeable improvement to the soundstage (especially with open phones) when compared to my Nuforce Icon DAC/amp. I was a bit disappointed with the low end from the stock tubes, but this wasn’t surprising based on the reviews I had read. Remember though, tube rolling is all part of the fun in owning a tube amplifier, and the Little Dot is built for it. I found a wonderful tube rolling guide on “Head-Fi” that pretty much runs the gamut of options for the Little Dot MK2 and 3. Just search “head-fi little dot tube rolling guide” and you’ll find it. I chose to stay in the EF95 family to start (the default jumper setting), and picked up some better power tubes (though I haven’t used them yet) and a couple sets of driver tubes (the smaller ones in front that really affect the sound). The Mullard M8100’s and Voshkod 6ZH1P-EV tubes that I purchased are both a noticeable improvement over the stock tubes in all essential areas, and you can hear the differences between the two of them as well. It’s pretty cool that you can mix and match tubes and headphones to find that just right combination that suits your listening tastes. I still have a lot of combinations of tubes and phones to test, but that’s what this hobby is all about. I don’t think I’ve reached the end of my tube purchasing either.This is a really great amp and I am very happy with my purchase. I personally don’t see the need for anything more for myself, but this amp is also a great place to start for someone who wants to see what the whole tube amp world is all about. Especially given the wide variety of tubes that are available for it all over the internet and the seemingly endless combinations one can experiment with.

Muy bueno con muchísimo poder, sin embargo tiene un poquitito de ruido con auriculares muy sensibles, si los tuyos son poco sensibles no lo sabrás, pero no hay auricular que no pueda levantar sobresalientemente.Como consejo solo cambia los tubos originales cuanto antes y tendrás un sonido con muchísimo cuerpo, excito para escucha de disfrute.

I use this as my daily driver paired with my D10s to power my HD6XX. This machine is incredible for them. The HD 600s series are very transparent and allow your amp really shine through. They are basically made for Tube amps. I actually tube rolled this amp and I noticed the difference istantly with my headset. This device has to be used paired with your favorite sennys but you will love it. You must not be afraid to open it up and/or tube roll. Tube rolling is integral to the fun of a tube amp. By opening the amp you adjust it to work with varied tube types. You can also adjust the power to fit different headphones. Do not use this with anything under 120ohms. It works better with headphones over 200 ohms. Planars are not great for this.

this kept tripping the power in my house. Couldnt recommend it!

まず TSdrenaのヘッドフォンアンプ　HAM-UDAA2 に比べては，音圧と低域の厚みが全然違います。わずかに粉っぽくなったかもしれませんが，それ以上に音の向上が有り余ります。これは期待通りでした。試聴初日はパンチのない音でしたが，6時間の電源投入を３日間続けたところから，音が前へ出てくるようになり，空間の立体を感じられるようになりました。本来の性能が発揮してきた感じで，目の粗さも気にならなくなりました。ヘッドホンはゼンハイザーのHD558。表現力は充分で，程よく面取りした音が気に入っています。やはりパワーアンプを通さなければちゃんと鳴っていませんでした。これで力強くて安定感ある鳴り方になりました。　まぁオープンのヘッドホンをバスパワーで駆動させていたのが，本来間違えだった・・・ちょっと試しに，1000円くらいで買ったビクターのピンコードを試しましたが，高音丸つぶれで，膨らんだ中低音が他を犠牲にしてしまいました。THEブーミーという感じです。どのアンプもそうですが，ケーブルによって変化を楽しむことが出来ます。【2017.03.17追記】2ヶ月使ってきましたが，さっそく真空管を交換してみました。出力管は6N6P（ロシア語だと６Н６П）6N6と互換性のある球は意外に多く流通しているようです。　国際的に汎用されている6CG7がオススメとの情報ありです。音の変化としてはケーブルの交換くらい違いが出ます。音域がグーンと広がって高音・中高音ともに伸びて，中低音が引き締まって，低音はゴツい。セミオープンのヘッドホンが「鳴りきっている」という感じになりました。前段の整流管はソビエト製の6J1Pに交換。全体的にクリアな音質になり，解像度も上がりました。まさに聞こえなかった音が聞こえてしまうというやつです。音の方向性も明確になりました。特に中高音が明るくなったおかげでソプラノの張りが良くなりシンバルの位置もハッキリ。歌手の大きさが原寸大にまとまりました。なかでもギターの刻みや弦楽器の響きが素晴らしい。出力管の交換に比べて，整流管を変えても大差はないだろうと思っていたのですがこれは大きな間違いです。出力管と同レベルに向上しました。 TSdrenaのヘッドフォンアンプ　HAM-UDAA2

Excellent equipment. Arrived a couple of days early. The bad thing is the price is marked up too much in amazon.ca, compared to amazon.com.Instruction manual said the gain is set at 10, the highest, in fact it was set at low.The original driver tubes are not bad esp. you burn them in >100 hours. You will not noticed it till you change to other tubes. "Power" tubes are very good indeed. No need to change them unless you want to experience tube rolling. I do and I enjoy it very much.The earphone plug seems a bit finicky. If I push a bit more in, left channel is lost.No need to step up to MKIII or high. Again, do it if you are curious and want to experiment.
