Great for a white noise machine
This is way better than the Marpac Dohm-DS Dual Speed Sound Conditioner I bought from Amazon and it is less than half the price! The Conair Sound Therapy has a volume control and you can turn it up really loud (great if you have loud neighbors). I have super loud neighbors and actually use 3 different white noise machines at night just so I can sleep (yes, I need to move) and this is the best one I have (and was the cheapest). I only use the white noise setting on here but there is so many settings to choose from. I plan to buy 2 or 3 more of these so I can have 2 in my bedroom and 1 or 2 for the rest of the house to use during the day so I don't have to hear my neighbors. Way cheaper than moving.Even if it would only work for say a year it wouldn't be so bad since it is less than 20 bucks. Granted, I hope it lasts for many years. If you use batteries it will drain them. Batteries is a nice option if the power goes out and it won't be back on for awhile - at least you will still be able to sleep. I leave mine on all night and turn off when I wake up but it has an option to stay on for I believe 60 minutes. If you need a white noise machine - buy this one. It is cheap, works and can be turned up very loud if needed. Also it has a big on/off button which makes it easy to use after the lights are off.Edit - 04/16/2017. I have bought a total of 3 of these and I still use one to sleep every single night. Yes, you can hear the loop which can drive a person crazy but I have noticed if I put it on the outdoorsy one (the one you can hear crickets) I can't seem to hear the loop like I can on the white noise one (which that one you can hear the loop and almost imagine a word being repeated (which varies with what your mind comes up with)). I still feel this is the best machine out of all the other brands, I have bought and you definitely get your money's worth. I did buy mine years ago (2 or 3?) so they could be made not as good now, not sure. Oh, and I'm still using the first one I bought, just bought multiples because of having rude ignorant loud neighbors.

Bought for the girlfriend
I bought this for my girlfriend because she requires some sort of background noise for sleeping. At her apartment she has a fan which makes me very dry in the morning and at my apartment I've been turning on the exhaust fan in the bathroom. She looked at a few noise machines but didn't find any that she wanted to spend her money on. So secretly I bought this thinking what the heck, its pretty cheap and maybe it will work. She loves it. White noise is her favorite noise, but there is an assortment that should satisfy most people. Some of the other reviews indicate that there might be some longevity concerns, but we have used it numerous times with no problem. And even if it only lasts 6 months, the price is low enough that buying a replacement wouldn't be the end of the world.Pros: Works, price, AC or battery powered, optional timer, volume controlCons: Potential longevity concernsUpdate: After the one I surprised her with, I bought a second one for her place. The one at mine gets used only when she is there, averages to probably once a week, but she uses hers every night she is there (do the math, that is about 6 times a week). There does seem to be some slight clicking/popping, but I think it is a biproduct of the white noise loop or something. It is by no means annoying and she hasn't once complained about it. Upping my review to 5 stars because both units have lasted 6 months, as someone needing the noise it keeps her happy, and as someone not needing the noise it doesn't keep me awake. Everybody is a winner.

performs its intended function very well
UPDATE: Two years after purchase, this sound machine has finally been retired due to a recently-developed unreliability in the wiring somewhere, causing it to suddenly stop working and need to be repositioned and restarted. I've ordered another of the same thing. It's a pretty good little workhorse, used every night for my kids as well as during naps, and it's traveled across the country with us through a bunch of hotels, and only now has it started having a problem.Looking at its price and reviews, I didn't expect this to be an incredible one-speaker wonder of unbelievable sound experience. And it isn't. It's a very serviceable little thingie for generating droning background noise to help someone sleep or to screen out surrounding sounds. It doesn't create a sensuous sound environment for ecstatic lovemaking. It smooths over that annoying clock ticking in the next room at night in an old and creaky house. I use it for that, and for my baby's naptime. Listening to this device, you won't be able to close your eyes and believe you're actually at the beach, experiencing a thunderstorm, or stuck in the chest cavity of a giant beast, but I'm quite satisfied, and my 8-month-old doesn't appear to be a very nitpicky audiophile.+ very easily packable and portable+ the 60-minute timer can be turned OFF!+ volume dial is huge and on/off button is very easy to hit when you're drooling on your pillow+ good range of volume for faint background noise all the way up to drowning out alley cats- not exactly theater-quality sound, but come on, it's a little bitty built-in mono designed to put out static- when it's on, a bright red pinpoint light lights up above the on/off button and might be annoying to some really sensitive people who need absolute pitch blackness to sleep, but it's really easy to stick a spot of electrical tape on it- not made of gold to be re-sold on ebay for thousands of dollars

Great volume control
Great for travel. Nice and compact. Bought for my second child and I wish I had this one over a more "kid friendly" looking one which I phrchased for my first child. It does its job, is cheaper, and the larger than normal and easily accessible volume control is excellent! Great system to add some white noise while your little one sleeps.

Not very good.
I'm sorry, I don't like leaving bad reviews, but this machine is absolutely awful. The sounds are annoying and repetitive and muffled. The ocean wave sound which is my favourite sound to fall asleep to sounds like someone flushing a toilet in the distance over and over again. The bird sound has a cuckoo over and over and over again. I used it twice and put it back in the box. I can't even return it because it came from America which I didn't realise when I ordered it. I downloaded some nature sounds from itunes onto an old ipod and sat it on a speaker and I use that every night now. It's wonderful.

Just what I wanted and the only place I could find it!
Our bedroom is right off the living room and when my husband is working and going to bed early, it was a constant struggle to keep the noise down. He snoozes away now listening to a running, gurgling brook! Great product!

No Concerns
I have no concerns as others have documented. It is used for white noise at night for my kiddos and they use the other sounds during the day for whatever. The volume is just fine. And actually, it goes really loud which is too loud. I think that's good because I have more options. I feel it meets is requirements for the price.

It works for me
The machine has a good variety of sounds - some are more tinny than others - but the sounds are on a very short loop, so - as an example - you hear the wave crashing the shore, but before it has a chance to ebb out, the second wave crashes in. It's too soon. It wouldn't happen like that. And it's just the two waves over and over and over again. However, that being said, the wave sound is the only one that actually works for me.I like that I can set it for an hour and it just clicks off by itself.
