Great Function; So-So as far as Being Sleep Friendly.
I bought this around June of 2013 and have been pleased! There are good and bad aspects to this air cleaner, so I'll quickly go over each.Cons: Unit is a bit on the large side, so it might be a hassle to use in a small room. The blue light that turns on when the unit is in use is bright, and unless you can sleep with and LED lamp on without issue, it'll annoy you. You could throw a few layers of electrical tape over the light to possibly dull it though. Plus, I read that blue light is the worst for you to try to sleep with because it effects REM sleep or something to that nature. Also, the unit isn't loud on the lowest settings but gets noticably loud on the third setting and higher -- It put in a living room I could see it making it hard to hear a TV if on higher than the lowest setting.Pros: This thing is super sensitive and detects most orders without trouble at all -- Cleaners and room deodorizer will set it off, it senses my deodorant after I come out of the shower, and yes... if you "rip one" under the sheets... this thing will sense it in under a minute and turn on! It's kind of a fun game to play with it, actually, hahaha. Seeing what it can and can't sense. The filters are also easy to replace, albeit the hepa filter is pretty expensive (~$60+ most places). BUT, the other side of the filter cost is that it took my unit THREE YEARS before the red filter light indicator turned on to replace the hepa filter! I used it almost daily and it seemed to work just fine, so I'd brush the filter off now and then and just left it until the change filter light went on. Now I'm buying my first filter and am groaning about the cost a bit, but if it lasts a full year or more if left on 24/7, it's a small daily price to pay for what you get.Summary: This air filter can be loud and bright, but it works very well and the filters last as long as you don't have consistently filthy air all the time.

Do NOT Buy - Elextrolux Discontinued Carbon Filters
The Air Purifier works great, picks up the slightest odor, and seems to filter well.WARNING! DISCONTINUED FILTERS! However, I spoke with Electrolux via phone on 2/14/18 and they no longer sell (discontinued production of) the must be replaced every 3 months carbon filter made for this model - EL023. Electrolux referred me to ereplacementparts.com, on which EL023 is no longer sold, and partswarehouse.com, which sells a non-OEM part. The EL024 will apparently work with this model, however, various sites report wrong sized filters being receive (should fit all the 500 models). Also non-OEM reviews are only averaging 3/5 stars on sites I checked. Amazon sells EL024 in a 4 pack with the HEPA filter for another unit. (This model's HEPA filter can be washed) for like $30 more than current price of the 4 out-of-stock EL023 filters.Really disappointed. Unit has 5 year warrantly and have only had a few years, but what good is the warranty if you can't buy filters? I would never buy this new at this time.

Fan motor howls with a sound that could wake the dead!
The Electrolux EL500AZ came nicely packaged, and worked well...for about 2 months. It was quiet and efficient until, about a week ago, the fan motor started howling like a pack of wolves. At the lowest "ultra quiet" setting, it makes a growling rattle that renders sleep difficult. At any other setting, it makes a loud howling sound that could wake the dead. Clearly I'm going to have to get it serviced. Not at all what I expect from Electrolux.A side issue [resolved--see below] that I noticed almost immediately is the extreme difficulty getting filters for this unit. The Electrolux website doesn't even carry them (or didn't when I checked). After my original order for a set of filters on Amazon sat unfilled for a month, I cancelled it. I resubmitted the order after returning from vacation, and it was filled promptly. Any unit sold by Electrolux should have filters available through all Electrolux outlets.============= Update ============When I attempted to get the unit serviced, I discovered that the phone number in the owner's manual was not the correct number for small appliance repair. At that time, I also discovered that Electrolux has a separate website for its "small appliances," where filters can be obtained. This website is [...]. Strangely, the main website at [...] does not direct you to this companion site!I found a local authorized repair shop by calling 1-888-845-7330. I carried in the unit to the shop. In about 2 weeks, Electrolux provided me with a brand new unit in the original packaging. So far, the unit is working fine Stay posted.

I actually bought 2 more after the first
Its a simple thing, and works wonderfully. I have a $550 Rabbit filter, and two Winix that are just great, better than the Rabbit functionally. This electrolux is a little larger, but looks pretty good setting in the living room. I bought one of these for my parents because it cost a little less and seems a bit simpler than mine, but still had the Hepa filter and plasma generator. They have had dogs for the last 20 years, and this thing really freshened the air, and got rid of the pet smell anywhere you put it. Even in their large open living room. On the highest setting it can clear up odors in a bedroom after a few hours and the odor would be gone for the rest of the day. And it is quiet on low or medium settings, and the high setting is not annoying, just a strong wind woooosh sound. So after it worked so well, I got one for two of my brothers who also have cats and dogs. They run them continuously and they take a lot of dust out of the air and really remove odors. I find this one to be the best value, simply because its the lowest price of any of the plasma Hepa air filters. It doesnt have the extra charcoal layer or like my others, but still does the the job just fine. With all of my air filters, I vacuum the dust out monthly, and the filter will need to be replaced about once per year. So I figured Electrolux would be around for a long time for filters to be available, and the filters cost a little less than other similar plasma units.
