This book is like visiting with an old friend
Oh, that Sophie Hudson! I've been reading her blog for years [...], so getting my hands on a copy of her book was no-brainer. One of the lovely things about this book is that each chapter stands alone as a vignette of a sweet family memory. In theory, you can easily pick up this book, read it, and put it back down. In reality it's such a fun, quick read that you won't want to put it down and you're disappointed when you get to the end and there's no more to read. Her writing is gentle and tender in regards to the relationships, but honest and vivid in the quirky, humorous descriptions such that the reader feels that not only does she truly KNOW Martha, Daddy, et al, but that she also wants to be along for the ride on the adventures of this family. Her spiritual insights along the way are apropos, simple, and relevant. The inclusion of special family, SOUTHERN (woo hoo!) recipes at the end is the icing on the cake. Two enthusiastic thumbs up, Ms. Hudson. I am encouraging all my friends to run and order a copy from amazon.c-zero-m!

It was such a wonderful treat. You are a great blessing and inspiration
Thank you Sophie Hudson for providing the free kindle version in January. It was such a wonderful treat. You are a great blessing and inspiration. I love everything about you. I did purchase your next book in paperback. I love reading but there's just something truly special about holding a really, really good book in your hand and being able to actually turn the pages...it's just like eating a scrumptious casserole or dessert. You can't help but close your eyes and savor each bite as you feel it being absorbed into every pore of your body and soul. It just fills you up to bursting and the first words that come to your mind is "Thank You Jesus" and you say it in truth...its not just words because you know it was a gift from him. Did any of that make sense? Wished I was blessed with your writing skills. Once again, Thank You!

Best Book of 2013!!!
I don't read a lot of non-fiction. And I rarely--if ever--post a review of the few I do read. However, I couldn't keep my excitement about this book to myself. It would be a disservice to you, my faithful readers, and the public at large.A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet by Sophie Hudson is hands down the best book I've read this year. RUN to the store and get yourself a copy. NOW. Don't even read the rest of this review. Just buy a copy for yourself ... and maybe one for your mama and your grandmama and your best friend too.Sophie has an incredible talent for weaving stories of her very southern family together with nuggets of spiritual truths. Some of the stories are quite poignant. (Reader Tip #1: Have a box of tissues on hand for the first two chapters.) Others are happy tears streaming down your face, wet your pants funny. (Reader Tip #2: Particularly for chapter 7, it would be in everyone's best interests to "go potty" prior to reading. I am not lying to you when I tell you I nearly wet my pants--and thus the bed--while reading this chapter very late one night. Additionally, my dear husband thought I was having a seizure because of the spasms I was having while trying to laugh silently so as not to wake him up. Needless to say, he woke up anyway.) But each story shines a light on the legacy of faith that Sophie and her husband are so blessed to have. Plus, Sophie tells these stories in such a way where her family seems to leap right off the pages, becoming more than just "characters" in a book (which of course they are, since they're real people and all).By the end of the book, I literally could.not.put.it.down. I read the last two chapters on the way to church one night and sat in the car in the parking lot to finish the last few pages. (Pastor, I apologize for coming in late to service that night. This book was just so good!) (Reader Tip #3: Clear your calendar when you pick up this book. Your spouse, children, dog, pastor, and friends will thank you for it.)Sophie's reflections about the treasures she has in her family made me reflect on my own family. There were moments while reading where I found myself imagining my mom or grandmother doing or saying the exact same thing. (Southerners are really all alike, you know.) Southern born and bred, I have a new appreciation for the way we sit around after dinner and tell stories--some of which I've heard at least half a million times.Every year it seems that one book stands out as a book that must be read by all. And it inevitably ends up under every Christmas tree we visit because I can't stand the thought of everyone I know not getting to read this book. For 2013, I feel certain that A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet will be that book (unless I can't wait until December to share it). (And for any relatives or in-real-life friends who may be reading this, act surprised when you open your Christmas gift this year!)A Little Salty to Cut the Sweet reminds Southerners of the joys of being Southern and is a great introduction to the best parts of the South for those who may not have the privilege of living here--faith, family, and lots of laughs.(And apparently, I've now adopted Sophie's habit of writing with lots of parenthesis ... at least for this review anyway!) [5 stars]I read this book for the pure pleasure of reading. I was not requested to provide a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Absolutely Delightful!
I've read Sophie's blog for the past four years or so and she often makes me laugh and her new book is no exception. These stories about her family will make you laugh until tears are streaming down your face. There are also moments in the book that will make you cry. Sophie has such a knack for storytelling and when reading these stories I felt like I was sitting right beside her listening to her tell them and at other times, I felt like I was riding along in the car with her family to pick up a bucket of fried chicken. Sophie ties in messages of faith through her storytelling which make the book that much more meaningful. Faith and Family are important to us Southerners! The end of the book contains some really great southern recipes which I hope to try out soon. If you are a fan of the Boo Mama blog, then you will most definitely be a fan of this delightful book.

Pretty Good Read
I found this book funny and endearing in many aspects. The family stories are genuine and I could "hear" some of the voices loud and clear. There were many touching moments in which I felt the author, Sophie Hudson, allowed us to glimpse parts of her life where God truly worked in her heart and in her life. I had a little trouble keeping track of all the family members (at first) -- but they grew on me!

A GREAT Book
This is collection of short stories about a family in the South. And it is HILARIOUS. Sophie is a VERY funny writer. She does dive into matters of faith a fair bit too and on occasion these can seem a bit heavy handed, but the woman is FUNNY and carries it off.

Rilassante
Una gradevole lettura che racconta la storia, vera, di una famiglia del Mississippi: abitudini, riti, pranzi e anni che trascorrono lieti.

Nice one Sophie!
Really enjoying this read. Totally different to anything I've experienced before and like the way it is written. Makes the south come alive and good to read about the food eaten there too. Nice one.
